ABSTRACTPoultry facilities generate great amount of residues rich in nutrients, which may be used by farmers to fertilize their crops. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of the fertilization with chicken manure on the physical recovery of the structure of a Latosol. The experiment was carried out in a loamy typic dystrophic Red Latosol, at Brachiaria decumbens Stapf. degraded pastureland. The treatments were: 0; 1,200; 2,400; 4,800 kg ha -1 of chicken manure; and 2,400 kg ha -1 of chicken manure + chemical fertilizer with 36 kg ha -1 N; 60 kg ha -1 of K 2 O; and 60 kg ha -1 of P 2 O 5 . The treatments were applied in January 2004. Sixty and 210 days after, the soil was sampled at the 0-20 and 20-40 cm depths. The physical attributes measured were: water dispersible clay, flocculation index, bulk density and total porosity. The water dispersible clay decreased with the increase of the dosage of manure applied; there was an increase in the flocculation index as the manure doses increased. There was a small reduction in soil bulk density and total porosity with the application of manure. The soil physical attributes evaluated were greatly affected by applications of chicken manure in the dose range of 2,666 to 3,750 kg ha -1 .
This study aimed to evaluate the influence of age and cyclical heat stress for 1 hour per day on the levels of serum proteins, metabolites, and enzymes in broiler chickens of 21-42 days of age. We used 420 male broiler chickens, Cobb Avian48TM breed, in a completely randomized experimental design, composed of two treatments and six replicates. The treatments consisted of two thermal environments: one in which broiler chickens were raised under natural conditions of temperature and humidity for the first 42 days of age (control) and another in which chickens were subjected to heat stress at 36°C, from days 16 to 42, for 1 hour per day (1200-1300 hours). At 21, 28, 35, and 42 days of age, approximately 5 mL of blood was collected by cardiac puncture in two birds per replicate. In each serum sample, levels of total protein, albumin, globulin, albumin:globulin ratio, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) activity and uric acid, creatinine, total cholesterol, triglycerides, high-density lipoproteins (HDL), very low density lipoproteins (VLDL), low-density lipoproteins (LDL), and glucose levels were determined. Concerning the environment and the age, no significant differences in the levels of glucose, uric acid, ALT, triglycerides, and very low density lipoproteins were observed. There was a significant interaction between the environment and the age for cholesterol and LDL values. At 21 days of age, cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C) were higher in birds under stress than in the control treatment birds, which did not occur in other age groups. Aspartate aminotransferase activity was higher in chickens under cyclical heat stress than in chickens subjected to control treatment and displayed a cubic response regarding the environment. The age of the birds influenced the values of total protein, albumin, globulin, albumin:globulin (A:G) ratio, creatinine, GGT, and HDL. In conclusion, cyclical heat stress, at 36ºC, for one hour, from days 16 to 42 of age increases serum AST, whereas cholesterol and LDL-C levels increase only at day 21, indicating that birds may have adapted to heat stress. Age influenced the activity of AST and GGT and levels of creatinine, total protein, albumin, globulin, A:G ratio, cholesterol, HDL-C, and LDL-C. Key words: Poultry. Cholesterol. Liver enzymes.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the physiological variations and influence of age group and sex on biochemical variables of 32 male and female Dorper sheep at the age of 15 to 121 days. Four blood samples were collected from each animal, at monthly intervals, totaling 128 samples. Biochemical variables determined in each sample were total protein (TP), albumin (ALB), globulin (GLB), albumin/ globulin ratio (A/G), glucose (GLU), triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (tCHOL), high density cholesterol carrying lipoproteins (HDL-C), low density cholesterol carrying lipoproteins (LDL-C), very low density cholesterol carrying lipoproteins (VLDL-C), urea, creatinine (CRE), total calcium ( t Ca), ionized calcium ( i Ca), phosphorus (P), calcium/phosphorus ratio (Ca/P), magnesium (Mg), sodium (Na), potassium (K), chloride (Cl), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP). The results were obtained in four moments according to age: M1 -sheep from 15 to 30 days, M2 -sheep from 45 to 61 days, M3 -sheep from 74 to 90 days and M4 -sheep from 105 to 121 days. Comparing the values of the biochemical variables among the four age groups studied a significant difference (p < 0.05) was observed in the concentrations of all the variables evaluated except for Na, Cl and ALT. Sex did not influence (p > 0.05) the values of the biochemical variables analyzed. Based on the results, it is concluded that the age groups exert a significant influence on the majority of blood biochemical variables of Dorper sheep from 15 to 121 days of age.
Mediante punção da veia jugular externa coletaram-se dois mL de sangue de 29 eqüinos, 18 machos e 11 fêmeas, em repouso (Momento I) e após o exercício (Momento II Variations in hematologic parameters are used to assess the degree of training or clinical state of the animal. The hematologic evaluation of horses at rest has been an object of study in order to establish a correlation with training or athletic capacity. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the hematologic profile of horses subjected to Team Penning competitions, correlating sex and frequency of physical activity. Two milliliters of blood were drawn through a puncture made in the external jugular vein from 29 horses, 18 males and 11 females, at rest (Moment I) and after exercising (Moment II). The blood samples were processed in an ABC VET automated veterinary hematology analyzer (Horiba ABX Diagnostics). The animals were divided into Group A, B, C and D according to the number of times they participated in the competition. The values of globular volume, hemoglobin, erythrocytes, rod-shaped segmented neutrophils and monocytes increased after the physical exercise, unlike the number of lymphocytes and eosinophils, which decreased. A comparison of the before/after exercise correlations showed no significant differences (p<0.05) between males and females. In addition, it was found that the value of the MI/MII ratio for the globular volume, hemoglobin and number of erythrocytes varied according to the frequency of the exercise. It was concluded that the Team Penning competition produces hematologic alterations in horses, which are affected by the frequency of exercising, regardless of sex.INDEX TERMS: Equus caballus, exercise, hematology.
