Persistence and nutrients release of forage turnip straw utilized as mulching in no-tillage crop systemAbstract -Straw of covering plants kept on soil surface in no-tillage system is an important source of nutrients for subsequent tillage. The objective of this work was to evaluate decomposition and macronutrients release from forage turnip residues. The experiment was set under field conditions during 1998 in Marechal Cândido Rondon, PR, Brazil. Forage turnip plants were desiccated and lodged 30 days after emergence. Straw persistence and nutrient release were evaluated at 0, 13, 35 and 53 days after management. The experimental design was a randomized block with four replications. Until pre-flowering stage, the forage turnip showed a great dry matter yield (2,938 kg ha -1 ) during winter growing and 57.2, 15.3, 85.7, 37.4, 12.5 and 14.0 kg ha -1 of N, P, K, Ca, Mg and S were respectively accumulated. Forage turnip management at pre-flowering stage cause a quick straw degradation and macronutrients release. Potassium and nitrogen were released in the highest amounts and in the shortest time to the subsequent tillage. Quickest liberation of nutrients occurred between 10 to 20 days after plant management.
ABSTRACT DECOMPOSITION RATE AND NUTRIENT RELEASE OF OAT STRAW USED AS MULCHING IN NO-TILL SYSTEMPlant residues left on soil surface in no-tillage systems are an important source of nutrients for the following crops, particularly under tropical climate, in which high residue decomposition rates shorten their persistence. The objective of this research work was to evaluate black oat decomposition and release of nutrients. The experiment was carried out during the 1998 cropping season in an experimental area located in Marechal Cândido Rondon, Paraná State, Brazil. A randomized block design with four replications was used. The cover crop was rolled over thirty days after emergence. Persistence and release of nutrients were evaluated at 0, 13, 35 and, 53 days after rolling and desiccation. Decompositon rate of oat residue was constant during this period (remaining 34% of the initial amount) and inversely proportional to the C/N ration that showed an initial value of 34 and a final value of 50. Most K was released soon after oat management, remaining only 2% of the initial content in the last sampling time. N, P, Ca and S were gradually released, and in the last evaluation the remaining amount of these nutrients was 55%, 42%, 48%, and 47% of the total accumulated amount, respectively. Compared to other plant nutrients, K followed by N were the nutrients available in higher amount in the soil, reaching maximum release speed between 10 and 20 days after rolling and dessication of black oat.
OF CASSAVA STARCH FILM EFFECT IN THE TOMATO POSTHARVEST CONSERVATION. This work was made to evaluate the fruit properties and postharvest life of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill) coated with cassava starch film. After the selection the fruits were dipped in 2 and 3% starch suspensions, dried naturally and stored in room conditions. The average temperature and relative humidity for the period varied respectively among 16-21 o C and 51-91%. The experiment was compound of a no-destructive group (evaluation of weight loss). Another group was the destructive group (evaluation of pH, texture and total soluble solids). Samples of the three groups were taken in 0, 4, 8, 11, 14, 18 and 22 days. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized statistical design, with 5 r...
Topdressing or pre-seeding nitrogen (N) application increases phytomass production, providing a higher nutrients accumulation and indirectly favoring the subsequent crop. However, N fertilization can alter the dry matter decomposition and nutrients release dynamics. This study aimed at evaluating the decomposition rate, cellulose, lignin and nutrients release speed from palisadegrass as a function of N fertilization. The experimental design was randomized blocks with four replications, in a factorial scheme constituted by two N fertilization levels and six sampling times after desiccation [0, 14, 34, 41, 51 and 68 days after management (DAM)]. The topdressing N fertilization on palisadegrass increases the dry matter production and N accumulation, but does not alter the decomposition and release speed. N fertilization reduces the C/N ratio, but it does not change the contents of cellulose and lignin and the decomposition and release of N, K, Ca, Mg, C and Si. The amounts of P and S accumulated in the plant and released into the soil increase with N fertilization. The maximum release rates occur within 0-14 DAM, being more intensive for P and S when N is applied. These results demonstrate the high potential of this species for crop-livestock integration systems, with some advantages that can be potentialized with higher N doses.
