A method is described for producing several liters of nuclear spin polarized 129Xe gas via spin exchange with an optically pumped Rb vapor. We use a 140 W AlGaAs laser diode array whose broad spectral output is efficiently absorbed by employing ∼10 atm of 4He to pressure broaden the Rb D1 absorption profile. 129Xe is polarized in a continuous gas flow and is then cryogenically accumulated and stored. Extensions of this technique should enable the production of tens of liters of 129Xe with a nuclear spin polarization of order 50%. Production of laser-polarized 129Xe in liter quantities is important for the continued development of magnetic resonance imaging using spin-polarized 129Xe.

The theory of spin exchange between optically pumped alkali-Inetal atoms and noble-gas nuclei is presented. Spin exchange with heavy noble gases is dominated by interactions in long-lived van der Waals molecules. The main spin interactions are assumed to be the spin-rotation interactions yN S between the rotational angular momentum N of the alkali-metalnoble-gas pair and the electron spin S of the alkali-metal atom, and the contact hyperfine interaction aK S between the nuclear spin K of the noble-gas atom and the electron spin S. Arbitrary values for EC and for the nuclear spin I of the alkali-metal atom are assumed. Precise formal expressions for spin transfer coefficients are given along with convenient approximations based on a perturbation expansion in powers of (o. '/yX), a quantity which has been shown to be small by experiment.

A new optical pumping method, "push-pull pumping," can produce very nearly pure, coherent superposition states between the initial and the final sublevels of the important field-independent 0-0 clock resonance of alkali-metal atoms. The key requirement for push-pull pumping is the use of D1 resonant light which alternates between left and right circular polarization at the Bohr frequency of the state. The new pumping method works for a wide range of conditions, including atomic beams with almost no collisions, and atoms in buffer gases with pressures of many atmospheres.

We studied the line shape of Rb D 1 and D 2 resonance lines in the presence of 1-10 amg of several gases: 3 He, 4 He, N 2 , and Xe. We found that the line cores are well described by the asymmetric line shape expected for a van der Waals interatomic potential. The width and shift of the lines is proportional to the density of the foreign gas with high degree of accuracy, while the asymmetry is independent of the density. The constants of proportionality for pressure broadening and shift were measured with much higher accuracy than in previous experiments. We also studied the density dependence of the oscillator strength of the transitions.
