Geopolymers are zeolites like structures based on hydrated aluminosilicates units of SiO4 and AlO4. These units, known as poly(sialate), poly(sialate)-siloxo or poly(sialate)-disiloxo are chemically balanced by the group I cations of K+, Li+, or Na+. Simultaneously, the chemical reaction of formation, known as geopolymerization, governs the orientation of the unit, generating mesoporous structures. Multiple methods can be used for pore structure and porosity characterization. Among them, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxometry allows the detection of the porous structure in a completely nonperturbative manner. NMR relaxometry may be used to monitor the relaxation of protons belonging to the liquid molecules confined inside the porous structure and, thus, to get access to the pore size distribution. This monitoring can take place even during the polymerization process. The present study implements transverse relaxation measurements to monitor the influence introduced by the curing time on the residual liquid phase of geopolymers prepared with two different types of reinforcing particles. According to our results, the obtained geopolymers contain three types of pores formed by the arrangement of the OH− and Si groups (Si-OH), Si-O-Si groups, Si-O-Al groups, and Si-O rings. After 48 days, the samples cured for 8 h show a high percentage of all three types of pores, however, by increasing the curing time and the percentage of reinforcing particle, the percent of pores decrease, especially, the gel pores.
In this study, the effect of waste glass on the mechanical properties of concrete was examined by conducting a series of compressive strength, splitting tensile strength and flexural strength tests. According to this aim, waste glass powder (WGP) was first used as a partial replacement for cement and six different ratios of WGP were utilized in concrete production: 0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, and 50%. To examine the combined effect of different ratios of WGP on concrete performance, mixed samples (10%, 20%, 30%) were then prepared by replacing cement, and fine and coarse aggregates with both WGP and crashed glass particles. Workability and slump values of concrete produced with different amounts of waste glass were determined on the fresh state of concrete, and these properties were compared with those of plain concrete. For the hardened concrete, 150 mm × 150 mm × 150 mm cubic specimens and cylindrical specimens with a diameter of 100 mm and a height of 200 mm were tested to identify the compressive strength and splitting tensile strength of the concrete produced with waste glass. Next, a three-point bending test was carried out on samples with dimensions of 100 × 100 × 400 mm, and a span length of 300 mm to obtain the flexure behavior of different mixtures. According to the results obtained, a 20% substitution of WGP as cement can be considered the optimum dose. On the other hand, for concrete produced with combined WGP and crashed glass particles, mechanical properties increased up to a certain limit and then decreased owing to poor workability. Thus, 10% can be considered the optimum replacement level, as combined waste glass shows considerably higher strength and better workability properties. Furthermore, scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis was performed to investigate the microstructure of the composition. Good adhesion was observed between the waste glass and cementitious concrete. Lastly, practical empirical equations have been developed to determine the compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, and flexure strength of concrete with different amounts of waste glass. Instead of conducting an experiment, these strength values of the concrete produced with glass powder can be easily estimated at the design stage with the help of proposed expressions.
Geopolymer is an attractive construction binder owing to its ability to improve the properties of the concrete and preserves the environment from the high CO2 emission. Geopolymer technology will convert the potential hazardous industrial waste such as fly ash into valuable construction materials. However, there is a need of studying the properties of iron-based geopolymer in order to enhance the fundamental and knowledge of the geopolymer research also development in this study area. Fly ash which contains a significant amount of iron oxide (Fe2O3) was used as a precursor and tested at different curing duration (1, 3, 7, 14 and 28 days). Crystallization of iron oxide (Fe2O3) contained in the fly ash under geopolymerization process will be able to turn waste fly ash into a strong concrete materials, simultaneously creating a waste-to-wealth economy. Furthermore, the formation of fayalite detected from the microstructure characterization is mainly contribute to the strength development of the fly ash after 28 days curing.
Global industrialization generates large amount of waste which strongly affects the depositing areas and the living creatures from the surroundings. In the same time, the construction sector meets an exponential development process, resulting in materials and construction areas increase. Therefore, the need of new materials was felt worldwide. One solution that knew a rapid development, especially in this sector, was to obtain new eco-friendly materials through a mechanism called geopolymerization. True this powerful chemical reaction between a waste, rich in aluminum and silicon, and a strong alkaline solution, a tetragonal structure of Al-O-Si is obtained that possess properties comparable to those of Portland cement-based concrete. In the present paper the effect of aggregates on local fly ash based geopolymers is analyzed from the structure and mechanical properties point of view. According to this study, the aggregates strongly influence the density, compression strength and flexural strength at any age of samples.
In this paper, the effect on thermal behavior and compounds mineralogy of replacing different percentages of fly ash with compact particles was studied. A total of 30% of fly ash was replaced with mass powder glass (PG), 70% with mass natural aggregates (S), and 85% with mass PG and S. According to this study, the obtained fly ash based geopolymer exhibits a 20% mass loss in the 25–300 °C temperature range due to the free or physically bound water removal. However, the mass loss is closely related to the particle percentage. Multiple endothermic peaks exhibit the dihydroxylation of β-FeOOH (goethite) at close to 320 °C, the Ca(OH)2 (Portlandite) transformation to CaCO3 (calcite) occurs at close to 490 °C, and Al(OH)3 decomposition occurs at close to 570 °C. Moreover, above 600 °C, the curves show only very small peaks which may correspond to Ti or Mg hydroxides decomposition. Also, the X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern confirms the presence of sodalite after fly ash alkaline activation, whose content highly depends on the compact particles percentage. These results highlight the thermal stability of geopolymers in the 25–1000 °C temperature range through the use of thermogravimetric analysis, differential thermal analysis, and XRD.
In a continuously changing world where the human operator still plays an important role in most industrial activities, health and safety occupies a fundamental place, with the goal of maintaining workers healthy and in safe condition during their job activities. One of the means that make this goal achievable is the use of adequate personal protective equipment. The carabiners are connecting parts that link the components quickly and reversibly of personal protective equipment used against falls. Thus shackles can be divided in multiple elements, such as: the gate, which always opens inward and can be provided with or without the locking system, the second and the biggest element is the body which can have different form according to the BS EN 12275:2013 standard, the gate and the body are connected thru the rivet pin and nose. The personal fall arrest system used in areas such as construction, speleology, petroleum industry, includes metal components that must possess high mechanical properties, especially shock-resistance. In order to improve resilience, a layer of rubber paint will be deposited on the carabiner surface. The aim of this study is to analyse the influence of rubber coating on the carabiners shock resistance.
