Summary Post mortem changes and anatomical‐histological structure in some organs of the carp The time relationships of the appearance of quantitative and qualitative post mortem changes in the most important organs of the carp (Cyprinus carpio L.), of average weight 1 kg. and free from signs of disease when alive were studied. The condition of external and internal organs of the fish in water was examined macroscopically and histologically at intervals of 0, 1, 4, 8, 12, 24 and 48 hours after death. Photomicrographs of the characteristic post mortem changes in the various organs are presented. A description of the post mortem changes necessitates consideration of the anatomical‐histological structure of the various organs. The greatest rapidity and intensity of the autolytic changes are in the spleen which is no longer recognisable 24 hours after death. The liver, pancreas, kidney and intestine cannot be recognized as tissues after 48 hours. In contrast, the tissue structure of brain, heart, ventral abdominal wall and jaws is still recognisable after 48 hours despite the occurrence of similar autolytic changes. Changes in structure were least when the interval between death and examination was shortest. An autopsy is an important step in diagnosing changes in the characteristics of tissues. The results reported are equally of value as a basis for differential diagnosis of fish disease.
Summary Proliferative endocarditis in the heart of the carp after exposure to the herbicide Karmex Over a prolonged period (40 days) the secondary effects on carp of exposure to the herbicide Karmex (effective agent 80% diuron) were studied. For this purpose 72 one‐summer‐old carp in groups of four, kept in 65 litre tanks, were exposed to diuron at levels of 12 ppm (Group I), 6 ppm (Group II), 0.5 ppm (Group III), 0.2 ppm (Group IV) and 0.1 ppm (Group V). There was also a control group (Group VI). In addition, 48 experimental fish from the Biological Station at Wielenbach (Group VII) which had been kept during the summer in a pond treated with Karmex, were similarly examined. The pathological‐anatomical findings in the carp in the laboratory were compared with those in the pond. Clinical observation of the experimental and control fish revealed inappetance and some degree of apathy in Groups I and II, followed by coma and death. The main histo‐pathological findings in these fish were in the kidneys and liver. In groups III—V there were also degenerative and inflammatory changes in the liver, kidney and heart. Groups I—III showed also degenerative changes in the gonads. The most marked endocardial changes, with numerous granulomas, were found in the experimental fish in the Wielenbach Biological Station.
