Questioning aspects of rewriting métissage in Rouge, mère et fils, this reading of Suzanne Jacob’s latest novel proposes to retrace the troubling strangeness (the uncanny) that operates in the story of a mother, a father and a son or, more generally, the story of a community, both governed by silent stories. Superimposing several individual stories and combining them in astonishing ways, Suzanne Jacob turns métissage into the storyline itself and relentlessly reveals the existential powerlessness of those who, at the same time, refuse to accept the stories and the history that would connect them with the past and allow them to face the future in mutual recognition. The character of the Trickster, a very ambivalent figure in Native American tales, who, in Rouge, mère et fils is given a certain healing power, makes this recognition possible, a recognition which also remains a recognition of métissage
