Die günstige Temperatur für die Entwicklung der Veilchenblattroll‐mücke liegt zwischen 20° und 30° C.
Hohe rel. Luftfeuchtigkeit (80% bis 95% r. LF) muß als optimal für Imago und Entwicklungsstadien der Veilchenblattrollmücke angesehen werden, denn die zwischen den Hüllblättern und am Stengel abgelegten Eier sowie die umherwandernden Junglarven gehen bei Trockenheit zugrunde; die maximale Eimenge ist bei 95% r. LF. etwas höher als bei mittleren Feuchtigkeiten; die Weibchen können in feuchter Luft bis zu 7 Tagen gegenüber nur 3 Tagen bei Trockenheit am Leben bleiben.
Licht ist für optimale Lebensbedingungen notwendig, denn Dunkelheit beeinträchtigt sehr stark Legebereitschaft (= Prozentsatz der eierlegenden Weibchen einer Versuchsgruppe), Lebensdauer und normale Eimenge.
Das Weibchen der Veilchenblattrollmücke legte in unseren Versuchen durchschnittlich 55 (maximal 98) Eier.
Das abgelegte Ei übt keinerlei Reiz auf das Pflanzengewebe aus. Erst die Junglarven rufen die Gallbildung hervor. Das Gallenwachstum ist bei den jüngeren und mittleren Larvenstadien am stärksten, es verringert sich bei den reifen Larven und sistiert, wenn der Kokon gesponnen und die Verpuppung erfolgt ist. Für die Anthocyanfärbung der Galle gilt das gleiche.
Die Entwicklungsdauer schwankt in den einzelnen Monaten je nach der Witterung zwischen 30 und 80 Tagen. Die Eientwicklung beträgt bei einer Temperatur von 20° C 6 bis 8 Tage. Die Galle bildet sich nach dem Festsetzen der umherwandernden Junglarven in den Herzblattrollen und ist erst etwa am 10. Tage nach der Eiablage zu erkennen.
Die Widerstandsfähigkeit der überwinternden Kokonlarven gegen Nässe und tiefe Temperatur ist außerordentlich groß. So blieben bei 30 Tage langem Untertauchen in Wasser 61% und bei 5tägiger Einwirkung von −20° C bis −23° C noch 57% am Leben.
Der Überwinterungsprozentsatz im Frühjahr ist demgemäß sehr hoch; bei unserem Versuchsmaterial überlebten 62% bis 86% gesunde Larven den Winter.
An Parasiten wurde festgestellt: Calliceras clavata Ratz. subsp. violae n. ssp. Novitzky und Platygaster spec. Der Befall betrug bei einem mehrjährig vergallten Veilchenbestand 12% und bei einem jungen zweijährigen Bestand nur 3,6%.
Besonnung der Veilchen vermag deren Gallenbesatz in unserem Klimaraum nicht zu verringern, sondern begünstigt ihn eher im Vergleich zum Wachstum in dauerndem Schatten.
Der Gallenbefall verbreitet sich über einen Veilchenbestand unter günstigen Bedingungen außerordentlich schnell, und zwar hatte sich der Gallenbesatz vom Beginn der Vegetationsperiode bis zum Herbst bei den „Sonnenveilchen” um das fast 9fache und bei den ständigem Schatten ausgesetzten Veilchen um das 7fache erhöht.
