This study examines the effect of environmental and experimental conditions, such as temperature and time, on the wettability properties of titania nanotube (TNT) surfaces fabricated by anodization. The fabricated TNTs are 60-130 nm inner diameter and 7-10 µm height. One-microliter water droplets were used to define the wettability of the TNT surfaces by measuring the contact angles. A digital image analysis algorithm was developed to obtain contact angles, contact radii and center heights of the droplets on the TNT surfaces. Bare titanium foil is inherently less hydrophilic with approximately 60°-80° contact angle. The as-anodized TNT surfaces are more hydrophilic and annealing further increases this hydrophilic property. Furthermore, it was found that the TNT surface became more hydrophobic when aged in air over a period of three months. It is believed that the surface wettability can be changed due to alkane contamination and organic contaminants in an ambient atmosphere. This work can provide guidelines to better specify the environmental conditions that changes surface properties of TNT surfaces and therefore affect their desirable function in specific applications such as orthopedic implants.
BackgroundPulmonary inflammatory pseudotumor is an uncommon benign lesion of the lung. In Korea, most literature of the pulmonary inflammatory pseudotumor was case reports.Methods:We collected 28 cases of pulmonary inflammatory pseudotumor in Korea. This collective series included 4 cases from our hospital and 24 cases were reviewed from the literature since 1977. The analysis involved the age, sex, chief complaint, hematologic examination, size and location of the lesion, cavity formation, presence of calcification and treatment method.Results:Male was more prevalent (81.5%) than female and mean age was 37.9 years old (6–63 yrs). Chief complaints were cough (44.4%), chest pain (29.6%), fever (22.2%), hemoptysis (15%), sputum (15%) and dyspnea (11.1%). There were asymptomatic cases in 11.1%. Hematologic examination revealed normal finding (53.3%) and anemia (20%). The mean size of the lesion was 4.76 cm (1.5–14 cm) and the locations were parenchymal (85.7%), endobronchial (10.7%) and endotracheal (3.6%). Except the endotracheal case, the lesions were in the right (46.4%), the left (42.8%) and bilateral (7.1%). Calcifications (18.5%) and cavitations (11.1%) were present. Diagnostic methods were open thoracotomy (82.1%), bronchoscopy (3.6%), needle aspiration biopsy (7.1%) and core needle gun biopsy (7.1%). Treatments were surgery (85.2%), steroid therapy (7.4%), rigid bronchoscopic removal (3.7%) and observation (3.7%). Postoperative recurrence occurred in only 1 case (4.3%).Conclusion:Pulmonary inflammatory pseudotumor was more prevalent in the male, and patients presented with the respiratory symptoms were common. It was necessary to do surgery in most cases for diagnosis and/or treatment.
The histopathologic type of lung cancer is known to be correlated with tumor behavior and prognosis. However, this classification is subjective and no specific molecular markers have been identified. The aim of this study was to identify protein markers in different types of nonsmall cell lung cancers. Two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis analysis was performed with paired samples of three squamous cell carcinomas, three adenocarcinomas, four large cell carcinomas, and four basaloid carcinomas. We found that 25 proteins in 14 cases of lung cancer were differentially expressed compared to matched nontumorous lung tissues. Among these 25 proteins, 11 proteins were down-regulated and 14 were up-regulated in these four types of lung cancer. Alloalbumin venezia, selenium-binding protein 1, carbonic dehydratase, heat shock 20KD-like protein, and SM22 alpha protein were down-regulated in all 14 cases of lung cancer examined, whereas alpha enolase was consistently up-regulated. Supervised hierarchical cluster analysis based on the 25 differentially expressed proteins showed that basaloid carcinoma formed one independent group, whereas the other three cancer types were not uniquely classifiable. Our findings suggest that basaloid carcinoma is a unique subtype of nonsmall cell lung carcinoma.
