We present a preliminary investigation of system performance in the context of fewmode fiber propagation, focusing on the impact of discrete mode coupling, while varying key parameters, such as the differential mode group delay (DMGD), and employing (or not) source separation by MIMO signal processing.

In mode-division multiplexed (MDM) transmission systems, mode coupling is responsible for inter-modal crosstalk. We consider the transmission of modulated signals over a few-mode fiber (FMF) having low mode coupling and large differential mode group delay in the presence of a non-ideal fiber connection responsible for extra mode coupling. In this context, we first analytically derive the coupling matrix of the multimode connector and we numerically study the dependence of the matrix coefficients as a function of the butt-joint connection characteristics. The numerical results are then validated through an experiment with a five-mode setup. Finally, through numerical simulations, we assess the impact of the connector on the signal quality investigating different receiver digital signal processing (DSP) schemes.

International audienceWe propose and demonstrate a new modified Lyot filter to independently ensure the channel amplitude equalization and the bandwidth tuning functions. The device consists of hybrid liquid crystal interferometers. We show numerically and experimentally that for a modified four-stage Lyot filter, the two first interferometers ensure equalization function with a maximum extinction ratio, while the last interferometer allows full-width at half-maximum tuning function by using, in particular, the optical canceling approach. Such a device is highly desirable in optical telecommunications, especially where in the core network the optical filters must perform several other functions in addition to their basic amplitude filtering action
