ABSTRACTT his paper presents a review of desertification, a process of degradation of the productive capacity of the land, particularly in arid and semiarid regions of the world. Because desertification increases gradually, the reasons why this worldwide phenomenon occurs and worsens were studied. In general, desertification results from the combined pressure of an adverse and fluctuating climate and overexploitation of natural resources. Aspects related to the extent and severity ofdesertification worldwide are explored, as well as the particularities of land degradation in Mexico. Moreover, the characteristics of desertification processes are outlined, taking into account the intricate network of relationships between environmental conditions and productive activities and their effects on biotic, edaphic and hydrological resources. Finally, a series of proposals relating to the application of preventative and corrective measures that tend to prevent and curb desertification are presented.
ABSTRACTA vegetation sampling was carried out in ten municipalities of the southern Mixteca region of Puebla, with an area of approximately 1,668.74 km 2 . Botanical samplings were made along with a quantitative ecological sampling to estimate the values of importance and basal area for the tree species of the most conserved areas. The objective was to determine the existing types of vegetation and the plant associations still present. Results indicate the existence of five vegetation types corresponding to deciduous tropical forest, palm land, tropical oak forest, gallery forest and Juniperus forest. Thirteen plant associations were identified, including seven that belong to the tropical oak forest, the most representative vegetation type. The preliminary floristic list includes 360 species, 225 genera and 77 families of vascular plants. A general discussion is made of vegetation patterns, their possible causes, the importance of the flora at the regional level and the present conservation status of the vegetation.
Cloud forest is a sensitive and vulnerable ecosystem that is threatened by human activities as well as climate change. Previous studies have shown how transitional ecosystems such as cloud forests will be the most negatively impacted by the global increase in temperature. Therefore, the niche modeling framework was used in this study to geographically identify the areas with the climatic potential to host the largest number of key tree species in this ecosystem and to propose them as priority conservation areas. A total of 19 species were modeled using the MaxEnt algorithm; binary maps were generated for each species and combined to produce one potential suitability map and identify climatic priority areas. Thus, 7% of the national area of Mexico shows suitability for the cloud forest ecosystem, although it is currently distributed in less than 1% of the country. Finally, potential suitability areas were compared with natural protected areas, current land use and priority conservation areas. We found that of the current suitable area, only 5% coincides with some federal or state protection regime. Natural protected areas have proven to be a mechanism for forest conservation, so we must consider increasing the number and area of those protected areas that favor the conservation of these key cloud forest species.
The tropical rainforest is one of the lushest and most important plant communities in Mexico’s tropical regions, yet its potential distribution has not been studied in current and future climate conditions. The aim of this paper was to propose priority areas for conservation based on ecological niche and species distribution modeling of 22 species with the greatest ecological importance at the climax stage. Geographic records were correlated with bioclimatic temperature and precipitation variables using Maxent and Kuenm software for each species. The best Maxent models were chosen based on statistical significance, complexity and predictive power, and current potential distributions were obtained from these models. Future potential distributions were projected with two climate change scenarios: HADGEM2_ES and GFDL_CM3 models and RCP 8.5 W/m2 by 2075–2099. All potential distributions for each scenario were then assembled for further analysis. We found that 14 tropical rainforest species have the potential for distribution in 97.4% of the landscape currently occupied by climax vegetation (0.6% of the country). Both climate change scenarios showed a 3.5% reduction in their potential distribution and possible displacement to higher elevation regions. Areas are proposed for tropical rainforest conservation where suitable bioclimatic conditions are expected to prevail.
