ABSTRACTThis work aimed at evaluating the quality of particleboard manufactured with different wood proportions (Eucalyptus grandis) and rice husk. The composites were produced in the proportions 0, 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100% of rice husk with the use of urea-formaldehyde and tannin-formaldehyde adhesives. In order to characterize the quality of the particleboards, physical properties (density; moisture content; water absorption and thickness swelling after 2 and 24 hours of immersion in water) and mechanical properties (static bending; internal bonding and screw withdrawal) were considered. Results showed that increasing rice husk proportion caused larger instability and a decrease in the resistance of particleboards. Particleboards manufactured with tannin-formaldehyde resins presented higher quality when compared to ureaformaldehyde.
In this work, the physical-mechanical properties of particleboards manufactured with wood (Eucalyptus grandis), bamboo (Bambusa vulgaris) and/or rice husk (Oryza sativa) particles, combined or not, were assessed. They were produced in the following proportions: 100% wood; 100% bamboo; 100% rice; 50% wood and 50% bamboo; 50% wood and 50% rice husk. In order to characterize the manufactured particleboards, their physical (density; moisture content; water absorption and thickness swelling) and mechanical properties (static bending; internal bonding and screw withdrawal) were assessed. The results indicated that the use of rice husk caused reduction in particleboard quality. Particleboards manufactured with bamboo showed better quality than those using rice husk as raw material. For most parameters, the particleboards manufactured exclusively with wood particles showed similar performance to bamboo and wood-bamboo particleboards.
Colorimetry of wood from thirty tropical speciesABSTRACT The color is a subjective parameter for wood identification, however with the CIEL*a*b quantitative measurement it is possible to transform in an objective method. This study aims to characterize the color of heartwood from thirty tropical species. The colorimetric parameters (L*, a*, b *, C and h *) were measured using a colorimeter. In addition, the wood density was determined for all woods. The results were analyzed by the Scott-Knott test (95% significance level) and multivariate analysis by the clustering method. The Cluster analysis divided the woods in five groups. One of the groups contained dark and dense woods (e.g. Dialium guianese e Caesalpinia echinata), while other group attached light and less dense woods (Ochroma pyramidale, Simarouba amara e Schizolobium amazonicum ).
The present study describes the effect of thermal rectification on physical and mechanical properties of Eucalyptus grandis wood at different levels of temperature and time. Samples of Eucalyptus grandis wood (10 × 10 × 200 mm) were heat-treated at 180, 200, 220 and 240 °C during 4 and 8 hours. The mechanical properties of heat-treated and untreated samples were determined by static bending tests. The physical properties were determined by weight loss and swelling tests. The results showed that modulus of elasticity, modulus of rupture, weight loss, volumetric swelling and linear swelling were affected significantly by the thermal rectification. However, the length of exposure influenced just weight loss, while the temperature influenced all the studied properties of heat-treated wood. More significant modifications with treatments at a temperature of 200 °C or higher were found in the properties of heat-treated wood.
