Cobb syndrome is an exceedingly rare clinical condition defined by the presence of a vascular skin nevus and an angioma in the spinal canal at the same metamere. We report the case of a 14-year-old boy who presented with sudden onset paraplegia. Physical examination showed port-wine stains over buttock and thigh. Magnetic resonance (MR) angiogram of the dorso-lumbar spine revealed a large arteriovenous malformation (AVM) at D11-D12 to L2-L3 levels. These concurrent findings led to the diagnosis of Cobb’s syndrome. The patient received orally administered prednisolone therapy and underwent endovascular embolization of spinal angioma. Cobb’s syndrome is a rare disease entity and literature search revealed only a few case reports and series mentioning this condition to date. The importance lies in the recognition that cutaneous vascular lesions may clue to an associated spinal cord angioma or AVM that may lead to weakness or paralysis.
An emerging concept in female reproduction is the role of endocannabinoids, a group of endogenously produced lipid mediators that bind to and activate cannabinoid receptors. Although adverse effects of cannabinoids in female reproduction have been implicated for years, the mechanisms by which they exert these effects remained elusive. With the identifi cation of cannabinoid receptors, endocannabinoid ligands, their key synthetic and hydrolytic pathways, and the generation of knockout mouse models for cannabinoid receptors, a wealth of information is now available regarding the signifi cance of cannabinoid/endocannabinoid signaling in early pregnancy. This review focuses on various aspects of endocannabinoid signaling in preimplantation embryo development and activation, and uterine differentiation during the periimplantation embryouterine dialog. It is hoped that a deeper understanding will lead to potential clinical applications of the endocannabinoid system as a target for regulating female fertility.K EYWORDS: cannabinoid/endocannabinoid , embryo deve lopment , embryo oviductal transport , implantation , mouse
Is Partisan Alignment Electorally Rewarding? Evidence from Village Council Elections in India *Do ruling parties positively discriminate in favour of their own constituencies in allocating public resources? If they do, do they gain electorally in engaging in such a practice? This paper tests whether partisan alignment exists in the allocation of funds for India's largest social protection programme, the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) in the state of West Bengal in India, and whether incumbent local governments (village councils) gain electorally in the practice of partisan alignment. Using a quasi-experimental research design, we find that the village council level ruling-party spends significantly more in its own party constituencies as compared to opponent constituencies. We also find strong evidence of electoral rewards in the practice of partisan alignment. However, we find that the results differ between the two main ruling political parties at the village council level in the state.
Universal early childhood education (ECE) in India is a relatively recent phenomenon which started during the 1990s (Pattnaik 1996). In the past, children were mostly being cared for within the extended family, not only by parents but also by other members of the family. With industrialization, urbanization and drastic changes within the family structure, the demand for preschools and child care centres are growing rapidly. Nowadays, preschool in India would mainly refer to two components: (i) early education and school readiness, and (ii) child care. Therefore, the choice of types of preschool depends on what parents are looking for and what is available. There is a strong sense among parents that preschool education can help children to overcome initial difficulties they face in coping with formal learning environments during the early school years (Rana et al. 2008; Pattnaik 1996). As found out by Rana et al. (2008), many parents believe that the preschool activities, singing, dancing, recognizing colours, etc., would help their children following the lessons to be given in the primary schools in the imminent future. Alternatively, parents may also send their children to preschool for logistic reasons such as free meals and other benefits, as well as considering it as a child care centre that enabling
