Developing good characters may take quite a process of enculturation early at the primary schools. Character education may include local wisdom or local knowledge learnt through the Indonesia language curriculum. Bali’s local wisdom, which adheres in the Hindu philosophy, is potentially rich for the development of character education’s themes and sub-themes. The central themes and sub-themes fleshed out from the Hindu philosophy are coherently tied into a system of meaningful moral entity. Children may learn the moral characters contextually and meaningfully through the national language of Indonesia at schools. However, caution should be taken as the themes and the sub-themes are critically beyond the first and second graders’ cognitive and moral development stages.
This study aimed at producing an integrated thematic book in terms of Indonesian Language and Literature for grades I and II with local Balinese wisdom. Therefore, in year 1, exploration of themes/subthemes of the materials was conducted. In year 2, the draft plan was developed into a draft of the book. In year 3, the draft of the book was tested from the validity of experts, content, design, and media (Nieveen, 1999, Yamasari, 2003, Thiagara Jan 1974. Users' responses were based on field testing (Borg and Gall 1989 and Kusmariyatri, 2012). The methods of data collection were a questionnaire, observation, interview, and test. The results showed that: (1) integrated thematic book with sustainable local of Bali was qualified as a textbook. (2) The validity (experts, content, design, and media) was qualified as valid. Students' understanding valued 75 (good). Thus, this thematic book was qualified as teaching materials.

Teaching English online is considered problematic. The availability of a support system and internet quota is the main obstacle. This has an impact on the low ability of students. The purpose of this study is to analyze the abilities and constraints of teachers in preparing lesson plans and student obstacles in EFL learning through Google Meet during the Covid-19 pandemic. The sample of this research is a seventh-grade EFL teacher and also 60 seventh-grade junior high school students. The design applied is a mixed method. Data collection uses three instruments: a rating scale, teacher constraints, and student constraints in EFL through Google Meet. The study results indicate that in preparing the lesson plans, teachers are less capable and have several obstacles in choosing learning methods or techniques, selecting instruments and evaluation techniques, and selecting learning media. In addition, the results of the study indicate that students do not understand the material in lesson plans 3 and 4 and do not like to use Google Meet in learning English based on lesson plans 1.3 and 4. This is related to the limitations of students about it. This research implies that EFL teachers provide online learning plans and focus on selecting techniques or methods, evaluation processes, and media.
The aim of this study was to prove whether the implementation of PARTS Strategy and the students' anxiety gave a significant effect to the students' reading competency. The study was an experimental study by applying Post test only control group design. The population was nine classes (420 students) of grade XI in SMA Negeri 5 Denpasar academic year 2012/2013, in which 2 classes were samples which were assigned into two groups, i.e. experimental group and control group, by a Multi-Stage Random Sampling. The research data were collected through questionnaire and test that were analyzed using Statistical Two-Way Anova. The results show that, first, there was different effect in reading competency between the students who were taught by implementing PARTS strategy and those who were taught by implementing Conventional reading startegy (Sig.=0.004 < α =0.05). Secondly, there was not interactional effect of PARTS strategy and anxiety level upon the students' reading competency at the eleventh grade students of SMA negeri 5 Denpasar (Sig.=0.966 > α =0.05). In view of the results of this study, it is therefore suggested that teachers should use PARTS Strategy as an innovative teaching strategy since the facilitation of this strategy significantly improved the students' reading competency. Keywords : PARTS Strategy, Anxiety, Reading Competency INTRODUCTIONReading can be placed in the first place of the most important skill in learning English. Some researchers believed that reading could support the process of mastering the other skills and improving the knowledge. However, the fact shows that not every individual learns it well. Moreover, in Indonesia, English is a foreign language. Thus, the way how the students in comprehending reading skill is totally different with the native students.Williams, (2010) wrote in her article that there are three minds of major problems in reading comprehension that being faced by students. First is language problem. Language plays a vital role in the reading skill. It can be taken an analogy like in ice hockey game. Someone who cannot skate will not able to play the ice hockey game. Thus, if someone has poor knowledge in English, his reading will also be poor and naturally also his reading comprehension. Second is foundational skill of reading haven't been atomized. It can be taken a case in speaking. When someone attempted to speak with a language which hasn't become automatic yet, necessarily he will try to divide his attention into two, contain of the text and the language itself. Because of his divided attention, the way how he
The aimed of this study was to describe and compare the students’ reading competency in answering high order thinking items across classes, text genres, and reading indicators. In the present study, critical reading is defined as reading for comprehension of high-order-thinking items which are focused on the four indicators of reading competency, namely: main idea, specific ideas, textual references, and word meanings. This research was conducted quantitatively and focus on year seven students. To reach such purpose, a purposive sampling technique was used to choose the sample. The subjects of this study were 238 students. The instruments used to collect the data was a Reading Competency Test. The collected data were analysed quantitatively and interpreted descriptively. The first finding of this research shows that the level of the students’ reading competency in answering high order thinking items are categorized weak or low level on both the descriptive texts and recount texts which is the descriptive text and finding main idea are the highest mean score. The second finding shows that there is no significant difference of students’ reading competency in answering high order thinking items across classes, text genres, and reading indicators which is analysed by using One Way ANOVA with significant score is 0.054. > 0.05, thus Ho is accepted and H1 is rejected. The result of the study is an important information about the students’ reading competency in answering HOTS items. it is necessary to do next research in order to design future effective educational strategy or educational policy in learning.
The purpose of this research was to analyze traditional herbs in the lontar usadha or traditional healing books and those which were frequently used by the traditional healers in Bali. These traditional herbs studied for potential diversification as local society’s drink or tourist’s wellcome drink. The sample were taken purposively and they consisted of 18 lontar usadha, 15 balian or traditional healers, and 20 tourism school teachers and lecturers. Data on traditional herbs in the lontar usadha were collected using a content analysis technique. Data on traditonal herbs used by balian or traditional healers were collected through an in-depth interview technique. Whereas, data on traditional herbs are potentially diversified as society’s drink and tourist’s wellcome drink were collected using a questionnaire. The questionaire was administered to teachers and lecturers of Culiniary Department, School of Tourism in Bali. Data were analyzed descriptively qualitative. The analysis of the lontar usadha’s contents, balian’s in-depth interview, teachers and lecturers’ questionnaire show 20 traditional herbs are potentially diversified as local society’s drink or tourist’s welcome drink.
This study aims to describe and compare the students’ reading competencies on high order items across classes, text genres, and reading indicators in SMPN 1 Ubud. The design implemented was descriptive and comparative research. The population of this research was the seventh grade students of SMPN 1 Ubud and the samples were four intact classes which determined through Cluster Random Sampling. The data were gathered by using Reading Competency Test. The collected data were then analysed descriptively and then inferentially by implementing a parametric statistics, namely: 1) central tendency measures, 2) measures of dispersion, and 3) simultaneous comparison. The result shows the students’ reading competency categorized as poor reading competency and there was not significance different in students’ reading competencies on high order thinking items across classes, text genres, and reading indicators. Poor reading competencies implies both of the students and EFL teachers to train intensively and extensively in reading process in order to have ability in determining the reading indicators of both descriptive and recount texts.
