The findings in this study will be useful in the diagnosis of ocular diseases in Rusa unicolor.
A Yellow-headed Caracara (Milvago chimachima) was submitted to the Ophthalmology Service of the Federal University of Bahia with a corneal abnormality. During ophthalmic evaluation the right cornea was stained positively with fluorescein; a blurred bullous lesion, with irregular surface, compatible with the diagnosis of bullous keratopathy was found. This is a rare condition in a bird which was treated successfully with a modified third eyelid flap associated with antibiotic and hyaluronic acid eye drops. The adopted therapeutic proved to be simple to implement and viable for repair of the bullous keratopathy in the Yellow-headed caracara.
The purpose of this study was to establish reference values for selected ophthalmic diagnostic tests in New Zealand rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus). A total of 22 adult male rabbits were used. The ophthalmic tests included evaluation of tear production with Schirmer tear test 1(STT1) and Endodontic absorbent paper point tear test (EAPPTT) using two different commercial brand materials. Applanation tonometry, Culture of the conjunctival bacterial flora, , conjunctival cytology and conjunctival histology were also performed. Mean (±SD) for STT1, EAPPTTa, EAPPTTb and IOP was 7.27±2.51mm/min, 12.43±1.69mm/min, 15.24±2.07mm/min, 12.89±2.80mm Hg, respectively. Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus sp. and Bacillus sp. were predominant. The cytological evaluation revealed the presence columnar epithelial cells, superficial squamous keratinized cells, lymphocytes, heterophils, red blood cells, mucus and bacteria. The histological analysis revealed a stratified epithelium, characterized by the presence of columnar epithelial cells with a large number of goblet cells. The reported data can be used for therapeutic or experimental purposes.INDEX TERMS: Tear production, intraocular pressure, conjunctival microbiota, New Zealand rabbits, Oryctolagus cuniculus, lagomorphs, ophthalmology, Schirmer tear test, tonometry, endodontic paper point.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the macroscopy and microstructure of a double setting alphatricalcium phosphate bone cement sphere provided with interconnection channels (alpha-TCP-i), as well as the integration of the implant with the rabbits' orbital tissue, through macroscopic analysis and histopathology. The external and internal surfaces of the alpha-TCP-i were evaluated macroscopically and by electron microscopy. Twelve New Zealand rabbits received 12mm implants of alpha-TCP-i following enucleation of the left eye. The clinical assessment was undertaken daily during the first 15 days, followed by fortnightly assessment until the end of the study period. For the morphological analysis, exenteration was performed in 3 animals per experimental period (15, 45, 90 and 180 days). The external and internal surfaces of the implant appeared solid, smooth and compact, with six channels which interconnected centrally. The micro-architecture was characterized by the formation of columns of hexagonal crystals. No signs of infection, exposure, dehiscence of sutures or extrusion of the implant were noted in any of the animals during the entire period of the study. The morphological evaluation demonstrated the presence of a thin capsule around the implant, from whence appeared fibro-vascular projections, which penetrated it through the interconnecting channels. In the first days after the insertion of the implant, an intense inflammatory reaction was noted. At 180 days, however, there were no signs of inflammation. The alpha-tricalcium phosphate cement implant was well tolerated in this rabbit model and appeared to be relatively inert with some fibrovascular ingrowth through the large channels. As superfícies externa e interna do implante mostraram-se compactas
The lacrimal production measurement is part of the ophthalmic semiotechnique in clinical routine of small animals and the Schirmer Tear Test (STT) is the most used tool for lacrimal production assessment in cats. There are few studies in the literature using alternative methods that aim optimizing the results and reduce stress of manipulation or discomfort caused by the test. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine the values of lacrimal production in cats through Schirmer tear test type-1 (STT1), Phenol red thread tear test (PRTT) and the Endodontic absorbent paper point tear test (EAPPTT). Twenty two cats, eleven males and eleven females, castrated, without evidence of clinical and ophthalmic disorder and assessed in domiciliary environment were used in this experiment. STT1 caused the major discomfort, followed by EAPPTT and PRTT. There were no significant differences between right and left eye and gender in all tests. The mean (± SD) STT1 value was 16.77 ± 5.10 mm/min., PRTT value was 27.95 ± 4.79 mm/15 sec. and EAPPTT value was 13.64 ± 2.67 mm/15 sec. The results obtained may help in the diagnosis of quantitative disorders in the aqueous portion of the tear film, through alternative tests, as well as in the guiding for selecting the most suitable test.
