The treatments considered supplementation of 0; 0.7 and 1.4% of the live weight (LW)/day of rice bran associated with citric pulp, in the proportion of 1:1. A continuous grazing system with variable stocking rate was used, to maintain 1500 kg/ha of DM in herbage mass in all treatments. The following parameters were evaluated: average daily gain, stocking rate, live weight gain, body condition, pelvic area, weight at puberty and age at puberty, hip height and estimated intake of DM. The supplementation increased average daily gain, stocking rate and live weight gain. Heifers kept only on pasture had lower body conditions and showed lower heat percentage than heifers supplemented with 0.7 and 1.4% of LW/day with no differences (P>0.05) between the 0.7 and 1.4% levels. The percentage of heifers showing heat until 16 months of age was 9.1; 68.7 and 70.6%, respectively. The supplementations levels did not affect pelvic area, age at puberty and hip height. The estimated intake of DM was lower for the level of 1.4 % LW/day.
This paper aims to discuss the impact of the introduction of pastures and grazing animals in agricultural systems. For the purposes of this manuscript, we focus on within-farm integrated crop-livestock systems (ICLS), typical of Southern Brazil. These ICLS are designed to create and enhance the synergisms and emergent properties have arisen from agricultural areas where livestock activities are integrated with crops. We show that the introduction of the crop component will affect less the preceding condition than the introduction of the livestock component. While the introduction of crops in pastoral systems represents increasing diversity of the plant component, the introduction of animals would represent the entry of new flows and interactions within the system. Thus, given the new complexity levels achieved from the introduction of grazing, the probability of arising emergent properties is theoretically much higher. However, grazing management is vital in determining the success or failure of such initiative. The grazing intensity practiced during the pasture phase would affect the canopy structure and the forage availability to animals. In adequate and moderate grazing intensities, it is possible to affirm that livestock combined with crops (ICLS) has a potential positive impact. As important as the improvements that grazing animals can generate to the soil-plant components, the economic resilience remarkably increases when pasture rotations are introduced compared with purely agriculture systems, particularly in climate-risk situations. Thus, the integration of the pastoral component can enhance the sustainable intensification of food production, but it modifies simple, pure agricultural systems into more complex and knowledge-demanding production systems.
There was no difference among treatments for herbage mass, forage allowance, leaf lamina mass, leaf lamina allowance, daily accumulation rate of forage and herbage total production. Daily accumulation rate of forage, leaf lamina mass and leaf lamina allowance decreased linearly during the grazing period. The participation of Pearl millet components in the sward structure was similar among treatments and changed during the time. The energetic supplementation increased the stocking rate at beginning of grazing, with high leaf lamina participation in the canopy and increased the average daily gain in subsequent periods, with decreasing of the leaf lamina participation. The effect of energetic supplementation on Pearl millet pasture is linked with the amount and distribution of leaf lamina in the canopy structure. The energetic supplementation does not affect the structural and productive characteristics of pearl millet.
Palavras-chave: altura da pastagem, carga animal, ganho médio diário, ganho por área, oferta de forragem Production of beef steers grazing oat plus annual ryegrass pasture managed at different heights ABSTRACT -The objective of this trial was to evaluate production and carcass characteristics of young steers grazing a mixture of black oat and Italian ryegrass pasture. Treatments were four different pasture heights (10, 20, 30, and 40 cm) that were obtained with different stocking rates. Fifty-five beef steers averaging 210 kg of body weight and 10 months of age at the beginning of the trial were used in a randomized complete block design with three replicates. The observed increase in the average daily weight gain (ADG) was associated with the quality and/or amount of available forage because herbage allowance increased from 6 to 51 kg DM/100 kg BW when pasture height was enhanced from 10 to 40 cm. Therefore, the ADG was 0.73 and 1.14 kg/animal/day for the treatments with the lowest and highest ADG, which corresponds to 10 and 30 cm pasture height. Considering the low ADG, the greatest gain/area observed on the 10 cm treatment may be explained by a greater stocking rate; both ADG and stocking rate decreased linearly by increasing pasture height. Body weight and hot carcass weight increased until 30 cm of pa...
