O brincar é de vital importância para o desenvolvimento cognitivo, motor, afetivo e social da criança, considerando que estes aspectos não ocorrem de maneira isolada, mas através de uma inter-relação. Nesta perspectiva, o presente estudo, caracterizado como estudo bibliográfico, vem apresentar a origem e as primeiras teorias pedagógicas sobre o brincar, analisando, ainda, a teoria da Zona de Desenvolvimento Proximal de Vygotsky e como a influência de um adulto ou de outra criança, com maior conhecimento, pode ser fundamental para o aprendizado nas brincadeiras, tornando-as mais significativas para ultrapassar o que já foi assimilado pelas crianças para que o seu desenvolvimento aconteça com maior rapidez e qualidade. É importante considerar neste processo lúdico de ensino-aprendizagem, a presença do professor e de seus conhecimentos didático-pedagógicos em relação à aprendizagem, para promover os benefícios que o brincar oferece para as crianças através de atividades orientadas e adequadas à sua faixa etária, e não apenas supervisionadas, onde o brincar acontece sem a orientação do professor, ou seja, o “brincar pelo brincar” sem compromissos e objetivos com o conhecimento, com a aprendizagem e com o desenvolvimento integral da criança. No âmbito escolar, nas aulas de Educação Física da Educação Infantil e do Ensino Fundamental - séries iniciais, o brincar está inteiramente relacionado às atividades, encontrando maior espaço para auxiliar no desenvolvimento integral da criança de forma sistematizada e adequada para a formação consciente do futuro cidadão.
