ON TOYS AND CHILDHOOD: ASPECTS OF THE EXPERIENCE AND CULTURE OF PLAYINGABSTRACT: Based on the paradigm of philosopher Walter Benjamin, whose materialism evokes the category of childhood detached from an ideological and indulgent view, the present paper aims at capturing the experience of childhood through the reading and subsequent discussion of Walter Benjamin's surprisingly contemporary 80-year-old texts on children's culture. By revisiting such articles, It expects to further elucidate the enigma of childhood values as well as to provide a view on how such values help promote a more comprehensive account of modernity.
Through features such as design, advertising images and marketing— language-produced texts, toys convey messages that reflect the cultural and social meanings of the world surrounding them. Taking advantage of the fact that many toys have become icons in the age of consumerism, this article attempts to reveal the structures of signification behind the visual discourse of advertisements for fashion dolls retrieved from the children’s toy website: www.mgae.com. Drawing on Kress and Van Leeuwen’s grammar of visual design for the analysis of visual features in advertisements, the author examines the topics reflected by advertisements for fashion dolls, the roles they play and the type of relationship that is established between the participants involved. The analyses of the advertisements suggest that, in addition to fostering children’s sense of group identity, they also promote values such as positive self-fulfilment and fashion consumption.
Toys have a playing purpose as well as a multi-functional dimension, as they relate to visual communication since their representations lead to unexpected practices by the child, which stimulates designers to be constantly exploring new ways of presenting their narratives to a double-audience of both parents and children. This article investigates how the discourse of toy campaigns has changed over the last decade, by focusing on the verbal and visual features of contemporary toy campaigns. It draws on the social semiotic approach of Kress & van Leeuwen (2006) for the images' analyses and on cultural studies (BROUGÈRE, 2014) to provide a broader view on the issues of diversity, representation and inclusion. The analyses suggest that as diversity and the gradual breaking of gender boundaries have gained more visibility in children's media, we have been witnessing the disruption of existing narratives traditionally conceived in toy lines and campaigns.
Toys, in their myriad versions, have been historically considered as objects of investigation insofar as their educational use, play and effects are concerned. Nevertheless, it must be said that academic research in the direction of toys’ multimodal configurations and meaning-making potential has been quite scant, despite a few relevant studies in the area (Caldas-Coulthard & van Leeuwen, 2001, 2002, 2004; Machin & Van Leeuwen, 2009; Almeida, 2006; 2008; 2009; 2014; 2017; 2018). This paper presentation attempts at demonstrating how systems of signification derived from the Grammar of Visual Design (VG) by Kress and van Leeuwen (2006 [1996]), such as the subsystem of modality (reality value), when combined with other concepts, such as Varney’s (1999; 2003) concept of technocracy of sensuality and Fleming’s (1996) notions of harder representationality and tactile attachment, have proved effective as theoretical tools to toy semiotics by allowing to go beyond the investigation of toys’ two-dimensional perspective to check on their material configurations such as texture, smell, kinetic possibilities and the degree of realism of these three-dimensional childhood representations. By means of primarily linguistic lens, I believe to contribute to social semiotic research through the articulation of the analysis of linguistic aspects of data with the discussion of social issues such as gender roles, diversity, representation and inclusion. All in all, my main intention is to propose an innovative, exploratory look into toys as texts as well as ideologically-loaded cultural artefacts.
This article presents the MAPA Social Innovation Lab and elaborates on the elements that influenced and/or led to constructing new narratives based on a plurality of views and multiplicity of people from different classes, gender and age, in different positions of power. It addresses the short period during with the lab itself was held, the tensions that arose on account of the very characteristics / particularities of the group’s participants, and the breadth and complexity of a co-constructed narrative. The social innovation lab was held in 2019 and was based on Theory U. It consisted of 37 leaders invited to rethink a social model anchored in the feminine-masculine duality starting from the central question: What does the new narrative of feminine and masculine values for the 21st century look like? We present three central principles that underpin the process and, from the point of view of a movement still under construction, we consider important issues for developing a MAPA experience as well as the limitations and possibilities that became (and have become) evident over the course of our MAPA journey.
