MODEL FOR YIELD POTENTIAL ESTIMATION IN WHEAT AND BARLEY USING THE GREENSEEKER SENSORABSTRACT: Areas with different yield potential within a field need to be managed separately as for nitrogen application in small grain cereals. Terrestrial remote sensing-based equipment such as the GreenSeeker sensor is one of the tools available to handle different management zones. To do this, the sensor allows the definition of classes to estimate yield potential. A model which correlated the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) to shoot dry biomass at the 6-leaf-stage was developed for estimating yield potential classes for wheat and barley. The model eliminated differences between species and cultivars as no correction for these factors is necessary. The effects of surface background (corn or soybean crop residues) were considered in this model. When readings are carried out before or after the recommended period, the model can be adjusted for under or overestimation. Spatial variability analysis may evaluate if yield potential zones estimated by the NDVI classes proposed in the model are related to spatial variability of shoot biomass, N rates applied and grain yield.
Decline and death of young vines is a worldwide problem for viticulture that may lead to economic loss. Fungal pathogens have been associated with trunk and root diseases, including the black foot disease that affects the performance of the vineyards. Fungicides have not worked efficiently to control the disease and alternative methods should be investigated. We evaluated the potential of Bacillus subtilis strain F62 for controlling the disease caused by different strains in grapevine rootstocks 1103P (Vitis berlandieri × V. rupestris) and SO4 (V. berlandieri × V. riparia). The in vitro antagonism of B. subtilis F62 was evaluated on mycelial growth, by diffusible and volatile compounds, and conidia germination, by bacterial suspension and cell-free filtrate. In the in vivo assay, cuttings and micropropagated rootstocks were submitted to four different treatments: control, Bac (B. subtilis inoculation), Pat (pathogen inoculation) and Bac + Pat. According to our results, the bioagent was able to inhibit the mycelial growth of all the three fungal isolates by diffusible compounds and conidial germination by bacterial suspension and cell-free filtrate. In the in vivo assay, cuttings of SO4 treated with B. subtilis F62 showed higher shoot nodes and length of primary shoot, while cuttings of 1103P had a longer primary shoot. In micropropagated plants, B. subtilis F62 promoted plant growth in both rootstocks and reduced the frequency of D. macrodidyma re-isolation to 24.6% in SO4 and 29.5% in 1103P. The results demonstrated the potential of B. subtilis F62 on plant growth promotion and in the biocontrol of black foot disease on micropropagated plants and cuttings of grapevine rootstocks 1103P and SO4.
Rice tillering pattern as affected by the presence of ammonium and nitrate ionsAbstract Rice development is affected by nitrogen, specially its tillering pattern which is determined by number of tillers. Tillers synchronism with main stem is related to leaves emission rate and both traits affect the number of productive culms potential. Tiller emission and synchronism of leaf development between main stem and tillers were studied in rice plants (cv IRGA 417) cultivated in a hydroponic solution (Hoagland) under three N concentrations (1, 5 e 10 mmol L -1 ), each with different proportion of 75:25; 50:50; 25:75). The different proportions under 1 mmol L -1 were similar for tiller number, synchronism, and productive culms. All traits (tiller number, synchronism and productive culms) were negatively affected when higher levels of N-NH 4 + ion (5 and 10 mmol L -1 -100 and 75% of N ions) were supplied to plants. Nevertheless, when N-NO 3 -ion was present in at least 50% of the solution, the detrimental effects were not found. When N was at 1 mmol L -1 , rice plants tolerate N-NH 4 + ion presence, independently of the presence of N-NO 3 -ion. At higher N concentrations, it is necessary at least 50% of N-NO 3 -ion in order to avoid detrimental effects on tillering.
Validation of model for wheat yield prediction potential using active optical sensorAbstract -The objective of this work was to validate a model based on the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) for the prediction of spatial variability of accumulated biomass in shoots and wheat grain yield. Georeferenced readings of NDVI and biomass, at the end of tillering, and of grain yield were carried out. The proposed method allowed relating classes of spatial variability of NDVI and biomass, with 81% of correspondence between them. However, the relation between spatial variability of yield and NDVI was lower, with 48% of correspondence.Index terms: Triticum aestivum, precision agriculture, NDVI, spatial variability.

-Grapevine production by classical grafting methods and in commercial scale emerged over 130 years. This system remained handmade until the mid-1950s, when emerged the first international certification programs aimed at obtaining mother plants with high viral sanity. The necessity to increase the scale of production on industrial model and plant material production based on minimum morphological standards appeared at the end of the 1960s. Along the 1970s, research unlocked knowledge on semi-automated grafting, process hygiene, use of plant growth regulators and understanding of physiological events of rootstock-scion compatibility, callus formation and rooting. So, until the mid-2000s, certification schemes and propagation processes advanced little in technical standard. However, grapevine growing areas were expanded and demands for plant material increased, and new diseases emerged from contaminated nurseries. These new diseases (new viral complexes, phytoplasmas, bacteria and grapevine trunk diseases) were discovered by high-sensitivity diagnostic methods. Today, there is a new discussion on the nursery segment worldwide. The propagation techniques have been reviewed from the perspective of reducing the incidence of new diseases and minimum physiological damage of nursery plants during the production stages. Therefore, technological innovations regarding equipment, practices and production inputs have been incorporated in new certification schemes. However, despite these advantages, these schemes have become more complex and multidisciplinary than previous ones, bringing difficulties in adaptation of nurserymen.
