Comportamento do consumidor. ABSTRACT-.Concern for the welfare of farm animals has been much debated in academic circles. However, for animal welfare to be broadly applied on rural properties it is necessary that there be consumer demand for this special product. The main objective of this study therefore, was to assess the level of awareness among consumers of animal products in Fortaleza, Ceará, of the welfare of livestock, and also their willingness to pay for products that take into account the issues of animal welfare. For this purpose, a questionnaire containing ten questions on the subject of animal welfare was administered to a total of 216 randomly-selected respondents, taking into account the sex, age, level of education and family income of those selected. The data collected were analysed using percentages and the chi-square test, a nonparametric test of significance. The results showed that most consumers do not have sufficient knowledge on issues related to animal welfare, but believe that different rearing methods can result in improvements in the final product. Consumers in Fortaleza are willing to pay more for better quality products and are interested in products being certified in order to ensure their final quality.
ABSTRACT:The objective of this study was to characterize the microclimatic profile of broiler transport trucks under commercial conditions, in the summer, by continuous monitoring of environmental variables (temperature and air relative humidity). Three loads were monitored from farm to slaughterhouse, considering factors such as distance and day periods (morning, afternoon, and night). To obtain the profile of the environmental variables during journey, data loggers, that determined the microclimate to which birds were submitted, were installed in the trucks; data loggers also allowed visualization of the Enthalpy Comfort Index (ECI) so that load regions could be classified according to heat comfort limits for 6-week old poultries. Temperature, relative humidity, and ECI in the truck were analyzed, using geostatistics, by the ordinary kriging method. The afternoon was the most critical period, and truck central and rear regions were most problematic for chickens, thus most susceptible to losses.KEYWORDS: poultry farming, animal welfare, pre-slaughter operations, heat stress. This study aimed to investigate the ideal brood area to be introduced for strengthening Apis mellifera colonies, considering variations in the hive's internal ambience. Therefore, eight colonies were equipped with data loggers for recording variations in temperature and humidity inside the hives. Then, these colonies were split in four treatments involving the swapping of four, three, two and one brood comb between strong and weak colonies. Growth in the amount of brood and food stores to the four colony strengthening treatments was assessed counting the comb cells to record changes in the brood and food area. The colonies tended to restore their normal thermoregulation within four hours after they had been manipulated and the hive cover had been closed, which quickly increased brood area in the receiving colonies. Results showed that adding up to three brood combs constitute an important alternative for strengthening Apis mellifera colonies because it did not interfere with nest thermoregulation, speeded up population growth in weak colonies and did not affect the development of strong colonies.KEYWORDS: colony homeostasis, thermal comfort, colony management. CONSTRUCTION OF ENTOMOLOGICAL BOXES AS A TOOL FOR TEACHING--LEARNING OF AGRARIAN TECHNICAL COURSES ABSTRACTIt is normal that students have difficulty in the assimilation of theoretical knowledge of entomology, since it demands a high level of abstraction. Field activities are methods used to reduce this impediment, guiding significant learning and amplifying teamwork. Thus, this study aimed to develop the practice of collecting and cataloging insects for making entomological collections in the State Schools of Vocational Education of the municipalities of Guaiúba and Viçosa do Ceará. The development of this work, the students collected insects in the schools and their peripheries, the specimens captured were cataloged and inserted in entomological boxes. In executing of the activities could be observed a great engagement and interest of the students, mainly because it is a different activity (outside the classroom); also, at different stages of activity was clearly observed the exchange of knowledge, setting up a cooperative learning, verified by on--site observations. At the end of the course it was found that no student required educational intervention process, once the analysis of the written evaluations and unwritten showed a real assimilation of knowledge. In this sense, the production of entomological collection was shown to be a significantly effective resource in teaching the discipline of Agricultural Entomology and Pests Combat and Diseases.
