The preslaughter handling and transport of broilers are stressful operations that might affect welfare and meat quality and could increase numbers of deaths before slaughter. However, the influence of thermal factors during transportation and lairage at slaughterhouses is complex in subtropical regions, where increasing temperature and high RH are the major concerns regarding animal survival before slaughter. In this study we assessed the influence of a controlled lairage environment on preslaughter mortality rates of broiler chickens that were transported during different seasons of the year and had varying lairage times in the subtropical climate. Preslaughter data from 13,937 broiler flocks were recorded daily during 2006 in a commercial slaughterhouse in southeastern Brazil. The main factors that influenced daily mortality rate were mean dry bulb temperature and RH, lairage time, daily periods, density of broilers per crate, season of the year, stocking density per lorry, transport time, and distance between farms and slaughterhouse. A holding area at the slaughterhouse with environmental control was assessed. Using a double GLM for mean and dispersion modeling, the seasons were found to have significant effects (P < 0.05) on average mortality rates. The highest incidence was observed in summer (0.42%), followed by spring (0.39%), winter (0.28%), and autumn (0.23%). A decrease of preslaughter mortality of broilers during summer (P < 0.05) was observed when the lairage time was increased, mainly after 1 h of exposure to a controlled environment. Thus, lairage for 3 to 4 h in a controlled lairage environment during the summer and spring is necessary to reduce the thermal load of broiler chickens.
Palavras-chave: avicultura, bem-estar animal, operações pré-abate Poultry transport: microclimate characterization of the truck during the winter ABSTRACT -The objective of this study was to characterize the the microclimatic profile of broiler chicken transport trucks under commercial conditions, in the winter by continuous monitoring of environmental variables (temperature and relative air humidity) and deaths on arrival (DOA´s). Three loads were monitored, from farm to slaughterhouse, considering factors such as distance (short, medium and long) and periods of the day (morning, afternoon and night). To obtain the environmental variables profile in the trucks during the journey, data loggers were installed in the trucks that determined the microclimate to which the birds were submitted and allowed the visualization of the Enthalpy Comfort Index (ECI) so that the lorry regions could be classified according to heat comfort limits for six-week old poultry. The temperature, relative humidity and ECI in the truck were analyzed using geostatistics, by the ordinary kriging method. The afternoon was the most critical period from the environmental point of view, and the central and rear parts of the truck were most problematic for the chickens from the microclimatic point of view and were thus the most susceptible to losses. Comportamento do consumidor. ABSTRACT-.Concern for the welfare of farm animals has been much debated in academic circles. However, for animal welfare to be broadly applied on rural properties it is necessary that there be consumer demand for this special product. The main objective of this study therefore, was to assess the level of awareness among consumers of animal products in Fortaleza, Ceará, of the welfare of livestock, and also their willingness to pay for products that take into account the issues of animal welfare. For this purpose, a questionnaire containing ten questions on the subject of animal welfare was administered to a total of 216 randomly-selected respondents, taking into account the sex, age, level of education and family income of those selected. The data collected were analysed using percentages and the chi-square test, a nonparametric test of significance. The results showed that most consumers do not have sufficient knowledge on issues related to animal welfare, but believe that different rearing methods can result in improvements in the final product. Consumers in Fortaleza are willing to pay more for better quality products and are interested in products being certified in order to ensure their final quality.
The production system using cages is a highly polemical issue in Europe, because of the space restriction imposed to laying hens. It is considered that the cage system might compromise important comfort movements, welfare and egg quality. This study evaluated egg quality and welfare of two strains of hens housed in a conventional system (battery laying cages) or litter system with nest and perches, and submitted to heat stress or comfort conditions. Two groups of 20 birds (10 Hy-line W36 and 10 Hy-line Brown) were submitted to two environmental conditions (26°C and 60% RH or 35°C and 70% RH) and two housing systems (cages or litter) in the early production phase. Egg quality was analyzed based on egg weight, eggshell thickness, specific gravity, and Haugh units. Yolk and shell contamination by Salmonella sp was also assessed. A significant (p<0.05) reduction in quality parameters was observed in eggs produced by laying hens under heat stress, mainly in the birds housed in cages
This work aimed to assess the effects of preslaughter lairage time on the welfare and mortality of broilers transported in different farm-abattoir distances. It was evaluated 215 poultry transport trucks from a commercial poultry slaughterhouse from 2006 to 2007. Data were obtained from the holding area acclimatized through fans and water misting in the mornings, afternoons and at night. The thermal variables (temperature and relative humidity), distance, lairage time and density of birds per cage were considered in the analysis. The effects of distance and lairage time were important in the variation of rectal temperature of the animals and on the number of dead animals per truck. Two models were developed (mean and dispersion), for each response variable in function of the interaction between lairage time and distance. As the lairage time in the holding area increased, the rectal temperature of the birds was reduced for all the studied distances. In farm-abattoir distances higher than 25 km, mortality was low when lairage time was lower than 1 hour. However, for distances below 25 km, in the same time interval, the number of dead birds was two-fold higher than in the first situation. The adjustment of lairage time has to be done accordingly to the distance provided that the lairage environment is correctly climatized.
Palavras-chave: aves poedeiras, comportamento animal, condição ambiental, sistema de criação Influence of breeding systems on behavior of two lineages of laying hens exposed to two environmental conditions ABSTRACT -This study aimed to evaluate the behavior and the welfare of hens comparing a conventional housing system (laying cages in battery) with another system using litter + nest. The effects of environmental conditions (stress or comfort) on behavior responses of laying hens were also analyzed by precision techniques. Two groups of 10 birds of Hy-line W36 and Hy-line Brown stains, at the beginning of the production phase, were submitted to two environmental conditions (26°C with 60% RU or 35°C with 70% RU) and two housing systems (cages in battery or litter), during two weeks. The birds were marked with non-toxic paint and their behavior was evaluated by tape recorded by video cameras installed on the roof of the climatic chambers. Behavior parameters such as eating, drinking or dustbathing were recorded during 2 hours, in the morning and in the afternoon, in intervals of 1s in order to investigate the frequency and lenght of each parameter. Housing system in litters allowed the expression of all natural behaviors of birds and those related to their comfort, which lead to improve the welfare conditions. The conventional housing system (laying cages) increased stress because birds tried to manifest their natural behavior in the absence of conditions for it.Key Words: laying hens, animal behavior, environmental conditions, housing systems IntroduçãoEntre as mudanças no manejo e nos sistemas de criação de aves poedeiras que logo serão exi...
