Nitrogen metabolism in sheep fed diets containing detoxified castor bean meal. The study evaluated the effect of levels 0, 33, 67 and 100% of detoxified castor bean meal (DCBM) to replace soybean meal on nitrogen metabolism in diets for finishing sheep. The experimental design was randomized blocks in a split plot design (plot = levels of DCBM, and subplot = four collection times of ruminal liquid or blood: 0, 2.5, 5 and 7.5h), with five animals per treatment. No effect (p > 0.05) was verified on nitrogen metabolism parameters: N intake , N faeces , N urinary , N absorbed and N retained (g day -1 ), N faeces /N intake , N urinary /N intake (%) and N fecal /N urinary (g g -1 ) ratio and nitrogen balance (%), with means 26. 70 ± 5.50, 8.73 ± 1.79, 2.17 ± 0.71, 17.96 ± 3.98, 15.78 ± 3.17, 32.90 ± 2.82, 7.89 ± 2.55, 5.08 ± 1.61 and 59.19 ± 4.68, respectively. The diets influenced (p < 0.05) pH and N-NH 3 in ruminal fluid (RF) and blood urea concentrations, with interaction (p < 0.05) levels of inclusion of castor bean meal x collection times of RF and blood only for N-NH 3 and urea concentrations. Detoxified castor bean meal can be used to replace soybean meal in diets for finishing sheep, as it has no influence on nitrogen metabolism, with stable rumen pH, concentration of N-NH 3 in ruminal fluid and urea in blood serum in relation to normal physiological values for sheep.
484Intake and digestibility of crossbred goats finished on caatinga grassland receiving feed supplementation during dry season
The objective was to evaluate the intake, digestibility, and ingestive sheep behavior with feeding phytogenic additives derived from plant extracts. Five non-emasculated sheep without defined breed at 28 ± 1.81 kg initial body weight and 6 months age were used. Treatments consisted of administering four phytogenic additives from the garlic extracts, coriander seed, oregano, and pods of mesquite, plus a control treatment (without additive). The ration was composed of Tifton 85 hay grass, corn, soybean meal, and mineral salt. As experimental design, we used a 5 × 5 Latin square design (five treatments and five periods). The data were analyzed through the mixed model through the procedure PROC MIXED of software Systems Statistical Analysis version 9.1, with comparation analysis between the treatment without additive (control) with phytogenic additives produced from vegetable extracts of mesquite pod, of coriander seed, the bulb of garlic, and the oregano leaves. There were no significant differences for the nutrient intake and ingestive behavior patterns. However, the additive intake derived from mesquite pods and coriander extracts provided an increase in digestibility. Extracts from garlic, coriander, and mesquite pods can be used as phytogenic additives in feeding sheep.
-The effect was evaluated of feed supplementation (0.0, 0.4, 0.8, and 1.2% of body weight) on the qualitative aspects of goat meat (moisture, ash, fat, protein, colouring using the CIE (L*, a* and b *) system, pH, cooking loss and shear force), and also on the sensory attributes of goat aroma, off-aroma, colour, texture, tenderness, flavour, off-flavour, juiciness and overall appearance. A total of 32 crossbred Anglo-Nubian goats were used, organised into randomised blocks and finished on a pasture of caatinga. There was a quadratic effect (p<0.05) on the levels of ash and protein, with a maximum of 1.06 and 20.44 g/100 g respectively. A positive linear affect (p<0.05) was seen on fat levels, with an increase of 0.52 g/100 g. There was a negative linear effect (p<0.05) on the qualitative parameters of cooking loss, shear force and L*, with decreases of 3.32%, 0.77 kgf/cm 2 and 3.39 respectively, and a quadratic effect (p<0.05) on a*, with a maximum of 9.13. There was a quadratic effect (p<0.05) on the parameter b*, with a maximum of 8.12, while the pH was not affected, with an average of 5.57. The sensory attributes were not influenced (p>0.05) by feed supplementation, except for colour and general appearance. Feed supplementation at 0.8% of body weight provides an increase in ash, fat and protein levels associated with qualitative improvements in cooking loss, tenderness and colouring, with increases in the sensory attributes of colour and overall appearance.
Thus, it was evaluated the substitution effect of 0; 25; 50 and 75% of tifton 85 hay to jitirana hay (JH) on intake and digestibility of diets for sheep, randomized in double 4 x 4 latin square design, with eight sheep. Dry matter (DM) and nutrients intake were influenced (P<.05) by JH inclusion, except for neutral detergent fiber (NDF) intake, that was around 682.76 ± 125.13 g per animal per day. DM intake increased linearly (P<.05) raising approximately 6.33 g per unit percentage of JH increased. There was positive linear effect (P<.05) for crude protein (CP) end NDF intake, with an increase of 1.11 g per animal per day and 0.02% of body weight, per unit percentage of JH included. There was a positive effect for NDF digestibility which resulted in linear increase (P<.05) by 0.14%. JH in substitution of tifton 85 hay increases DM and nutrients intake, but does not influence the digestibility, except for NDF digestibility, recommending use of 75% in substitution, which allows satisfactory nutritional requirements for DM and CP intake, and increase the NDF digestibility.
-The effects of replacing Tifton hay with castor bean hulls (0, 33, 66 and 100%) on the leg tissue composition, chemical composition, physicochemical parameters and sensorial traits of sheep meat were studied. A total of 28 non-castrated sheep averaging seven months in age with an average initial weight of 19.5±4.3 kg were assigned to a randomized block design with four treatments and seven replicates and were slaughtered after 70 days of confinement. At slaughter, body weight and leg, muscle and bone weights decreased linearly, whereas the muscle-to-bone ratio increased linearly according to the treatments. There was a quadratic effect on yellow intensity (maximum of 8.05 with replacement of 54.5%) and the percentage of cooking losses (minimum of 33.8% with replacement of 45.17%). The treatment employed did not affect either the chemical composition or sensorial traits of the lamb meat. Although replacing Tifton hay with castor bean hulls alters the tissue composition of the leg as well as some physicochemical parameters of the meat, the sensory analysis indicated good acceptability of the meat, regardless of the inclusion of this byproduct.
