infective hepatitis, alcoholic hepatitis, chronic active hepatitis, obstructive jaundice, cirrhosis of liver and amoebic liver abscess. It was observed that serum ALP and 5'NT were significantly increased in all cases of chronic active hepatitis and obstructive hepatic disease. However, the elevation observed in the latter was much higher than the former. Serum SDH and ALD levels were elevated in all cases of infective hepatitis, studied though increase in the former was much higher than the latter, suggesting its significance in the diagnostic confirmation of this disease. Results presented suggest 5'NT and SDH as more reliable diagnostic test compared to ALP and ALD for obstructive jaundice and infective hepatitis respectively.
A 45-year-old healthy male presented with a non-productive cough associated with shortness of breath for one week. Computed tomography of chest showed a cystic lesion in the anterior segment of left upper lobe closely abutting mediastinum showing air in most of the cavity with posterior dependent fluid level and an internal membrane-like structure, Hydatid Serology was positive. The patient was initially managed with Analgesics, antibiotics followed by pericystectomy. Hydatid cyst is a parasitic infection caused by the larval form of Echinococcus granulosis. On CT, a ruptured cyst shows collapsed membranes known as 'Serpent sign'.
Over a period of 2 years, 28 patients admitted to Government General Hospital (GGH), Sangli (which is attached to Government Medical College (GMC), Miraj) yielded multi-drug resistant non-typhoidal salmonellae from their clinical material. The pediatric age group predominated in the study, accounting for 93% of cases. Salmonella typhimurium was the main isolate (86%), the other being Salmonella newport (14%). Gastroenteritis was the commonest presentation. Septicaemia was seen with 100% mortality, in infants below 1 month of age. Two cases of meningitis were also seen.
