A high-speed transversal filter processor with 64 8-bit multiplier accumulators employing several innovative custom design techniques has been realized in 14"x 14" silicon at 20 MHz speeds. The processor (L64240) can be configured as a one-dimensional filter for radar or as a two-dimensional filter for real-time image applications. This paper describes the internal architecture of the filter, it's key components, and the critical concerns addressing the speed and size of the design.
INTRODUCTIONImage processing tasks are increasingly in demand for military hardware, factory automation, medical equipment, and robotic systems. In all these areas, real-time performance is desired but requiring more performance than any general purpose processor or mainframe can deliver. In particular, a real-time processor that performs both one dimensional convolutions
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
