GENETIC VARIABILITY OF HALF SIBS EUCALYPTUS PROGENIES FOR COLD TOLERANCEABSTRACT -The aim of this study was to estimate quantitative genetic parameters of progenies under frost situations and to determine the interaction of genotype x environments for Eucalyptus dunnii progenies in two different sites. The progeny trials were set up in 2010, using 20 open pollination progenies of E. dunnii. The following variables were evaluated: plant height (HGT), diameter at breast height (DBH), and wood volume (VOL) in cubic meters. Descriptive and statistical analysis were used as well as phenotypic/genotype correlation by location and joint variance analysis and the genetic parameters were estimated. Significant differences were detected (p<0,05) among progenies for silvicultural characters, suggesting the possibilities for selection gain. By the joint analysis, the interaction of progenies x environments (P x E) did not show significant differences, confirming that the superior progenies identified in the tests can be used for both studied locations. The genetic and phenotypic correlations results ranged from low to high (0.23 to 1.0) values for the studied characters, and the great majority of correlations were significant (p<0,05) in which the diameter at breast height was highly correlated with volume. Because of high genetic variability and genetic control of the characters, the population allows to obtain gains with selection between in the progenies.
Relationship between basic density and shrinkage in teca woodABSTRACT The objective of this study was to determinate the basic density, collapse, retraction, and anisotropy coefficient of teca wood and to study the association between these physical properties, aiming to define it's quality. The timber used was from the state of Minas Gerais, with dimensions of 20 x 20 x 50 mm in the radial, tangential and longitudinal directions, respectively. The determinations of the basic density and retractions were performed according to the NBR 11941 and NBR 7190 respectively. The collapse was calculated by the deformation of the initial area by the final area. The data processing was performed by descriptive statistical analysis, the path analysis and principal components. The results showed average basic density values of the samples from 0.510 g.cm -3 and moderate collapse (2.53 mm). The partial volumetric retraction (3.6%) and total (5.23%) presented a stable behavior, justifying the low value of anisotropy coefficient (1.99%), indicating dimensional stability. The correlation analysis did not present significance between density and other parameters. In the analysis of the main components (PC), there was a greater correlation between total retractions in PC1 and partial retractions and collapse in PC2. Therefore, the teak wood didn't have any relation between the basic density and other evaluated properties.

AbstractThe research objective was to study the genetic diversity of morphological traits in Eucalyptus grandis progenies growing under paclobutrazol regulator effects. The progeny trail was set up through design of randomized blocks. The morphological changes occurred before and during the plant flowering were analyzed. The estimation of genetic parameters were for plant height and stem diameter. The paclobutrazol have caused changes on plant development being strong by the beginning and becoming lightening through the evaluations. The coefficients of variation have shown there is higher genetic diversity within than among progenies for the studied traits. Therefore, it can have high efficiency on selection within progenies in the Eucalyptus grandis breeding program.
This study assessed the genetic variability in open-pollinated progenies of Eucalyptus urophylla for resistance to rust (Puccinia psidii). The progeny trial was conducted on a statistical randomized block design with 20 progenies, five plants per plot, and nine replications. Analysis of variance showed high genetic variability for the studied trait, with potential for selection gains. The genetic variability of this population provides support to conduct a breeding program with superior individuals for rust resistance, allowing low costs and minimizing the yield losses on eucalyptus plantations.
