Evaluation of the Energy-related Properties of Tropical Wood Waste Using NIR Spectroscopy ABSTRACTThe aim of this study was to evaluate the energy-related potential of wood residues of four Amazonian species and calibrate the properties of wood and charcoal using the Near Infrared Spectrometry (NIRS) technique. Residue slabs of cardeiro (Scleronema micranthum Ducke), cedrinho (Scleronema sp.), louro (Ocotea sp.), and piquiarana (Caryocar villosum Pers.) wood were used. The following properties were determined: density, chemical composition, immediate chemical analysis, and superior calorific value of wood; and yield, immediate chemical analysis, calorific value, and friability of charcoal. NIR spectra were obtained and calibration models were generated for each energy property. The results indicate that residues of these forest species can be used as a renewable energy source. NIR spectroscopy has proved to be a possible tool for calibrating energy properties of wood.
Relationship between basic density and shrinkage in teca woodABSTRACT The objective of this study was to determinate the basic density, collapse, retraction, and anisotropy coefficient of teca wood and to study the association between these physical properties, aiming to define it's quality. The timber used was from the state of Minas Gerais, with dimensions of 20 x 20 x 50 mm in the radial, tangential and longitudinal directions, respectively. The determinations of the basic density and retractions were performed according to the NBR 11941 and NBR 7190 respectively. The collapse was calculated by the deformation of the initial area by the final area. The data processing was performed by descriptive statistical analysis, the path analysis and principal components. The results showed average basic density values of the samples from 0.510 g.cm -3 and moderate collapse (2.53 mm). The partial volumetric retraction (3.6%) and total (5.23%) presented a stable behavior, justifying the low value of anisotropy coefficient (1.99%), indicating dimensional stability. The correlation analysis did not present significance between density and other parameters. In the analysis of the main components (PC), there was a greater correlation between total retractions in PC1 and partial retractions and collapse in PC2. Therefore, the teak wood didn't have any relation between the basic density and other evaluated properties.
We aimed to assess the quality of charcoal from three Eucalyptus and Corymbia citriodora species for energy production in the South of Tocantins state. A hybrid Eucalyptus urophylla x Eucalyptus grandis, the species Eucalyptus urophylla, Eucalyptus camaldulensis, and Corymbia citriodora were selected for the study. In the preparation of the material, 20 specimens of each species with the dimensions of 2.0 x 2.0 x 5.0 cm were made, being ten repetitions for each carbonization gait with different final temperatures and heating rates. The basic wood density, total gravimetric yield, total yields in condensable and non-condensable gases, immediate chemical analysis, and higher calorific value were determined. Corymbia citriodora presented higher wood basic density (0.583 g/cm³) and charcoal apparent density (0.459 g/cm³). In immediate chemical analysis, Eucalyptus urophylla and Corymbia citriodora presented the best averages among all species. The calorific value ranged from 7235.97 to 7573.98 (kcal/kg), considered an acceptable value for energy production. The final carbonization temperature of 550°C is recommended, with Eucalyptus urophylla and Corymbia citriodora presenting the best averages.
