BackgroundThe biological mechanisms involved in inflammatory response to air pollution are not clearly understood.ObjectiveIn this study we assessed the association of short-term air pollutant exposure with inflammatory markers and lung function.MethodsWe studied a cohort of 158 asthmatic and 50 nonasthmatic school-age children, followed an average of 22 weeks. We conducted spirometric tests, measurements of fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO), interleukin-8 (IL-8) in nasal lavage, and pH of exhaled breath condensate every 15 days during follow-up. Data were analyzed using linear mixed-effects models.ResultsAn increase of 17.5 μg/m3 in the 8-hr moving average of PM2.5 levels (interquartile range) was associated with a 1.08-ppb increase in FeNO [95% confidence interval (CI), 1.01–1.16] and a 1.07-pg/mL increase in IL-8 (95% CI 0.98–1.19) in asthmatic children and a 1.16 pg/ml increase in IL-8 (95% CI, 1.00–1.36) in nonasthmatic children. The 5-day accumulated average of exposure to particulate matter < 2.5 μm in aerodynamic diamter (PM2.5) was significantly inversely associated with forced expiratory volume in 1 sec (FEV1) (p = 0.048) and forced vital capacity (FVC) (p = 0.012) in asthmatic children and with FVC (p = 0.021) in nonasthmatic children. FeNO and FEV1 were inversely associated (p = 0.005) in asthmatic children.ConclusionsExposure to PM2.5 resulted in acute airway inflammation and decrease in lung function in both asthmatic and nonasthmatic children.
IntroductionAir pollutant exposure has been associated with an increase in inflammatory markers and a decline in lung function in asthmatic children. Several studies suggest that dietary intake of fruits and vegetables might modify the adverse effect of air pollutants.MethodsA total of 158 asthmatic children recruited at the Children's Hospital of Mexico and 50 non-asthmatic children were followed for 22 weeks. Pulmonary function was measured and nasal lavage collected and analyzed every 2 weeks. Dietary intake was evaluated using a 108-item food frequency questionnaire and a fruit and vegetable index (FVI) and a Mediterranean diet index (MDI) were constructed. The impact of these indices on lung function and interleukin-8 (IL-8) and their interaction with air pollutants were determined using mixed regression models with random intercept and random slope.ResultsFVI was inversely related to IL-8 levels in nasal lavage (p < 0.02) with a significant inverse trend (test for trend p < 0.001), MDI was positively related to lung function (p < 0.05), and children in the highest category of MDI had a higher FEV1 (test for trend p < 0.12) and FVC (test for trend p < 0.06) than children in the lowest category. A significant interaction was observed between FVI and ozone for FEV1 and FVC as was with MDI and ozone for FVC. No effect of diet was observed among healthy children.ConclusionOur results suggest that fruit and vegetable intake and close adherence to the Mediterranean diet have a beneficial effect on inflammatory response and lung function in asthmatic children living in Mexico City.

Objetivo. Evaluar las tendencias de mortalidad por cáncer en México entre 1980 y 2011. Material y métodos. Se calcularon las tasas de mortalidad ajustadas por edad y sexo para todos los cánceres y para las 15 localizaciones más frecuentes mediante el método directo y tomando como población estándar la población mundial de 2010. Las tendencias en las tasas de mortalidad y el cambio porcentual anual para cada tipo de cáncer se estimaron a través de un modelo de regresión joinpoint. Resultados. A partir de 2004 y como consecuencia de la reducción de la mortalidad por cáncer de pulmón (-3.2% en hombres y -1.8% en mujeres), estómago (-2.1% en hombres y -2.4% en mujeres) y cérvix (-4.7%), se observó una disminución significativa (~1% anual) en la mortalidad por cáncer en general tanto en el grupo de todas las edades como en el de 35 a 64 años para ambos sexos. La mortalidad por otros cánceres como el de mama y el de ovario, en las mujeres o el de próstata, en los hombres, mostró un aumento sostenido. Conclusiones. Algunas de las reducciones en la mortalidad por cáncer pueden ser parcialmente atribuidas a la efectividad de los programas de prevención establecidos. Sin embargo, se requiere implementar registros adecuados de cáncer con base poblacional para evaluar el impacto real de estos programas, así como diseñar y evaluar intervenciones innovadoras que permitan desarrollar políticas de prevención más costo-efectivas.
Objective: To investigate the relationship between dietary patterns and selfperceived body shape silhouette and BMI in a sample of Mexican women. Design: A cross-sectional analysis of dietary habits from baseline data of a large cohort study (EsMaestra) (1) ) and to 71?9 % in 2006 (2) . This represents a 41 % and 160 % increase in prevalence of overweight and obesity, respectively, in just a decade (3) . Among adults, obesity is more prevalent among women than among men. In 2006, 36?9 % of women were obese (BMI $30?0 kg/m 2 ), whereas only 23?5 % of men belonged to the obese group (3) . A total of 35?1 % of Mexican adult women are estimated to be at risk for excessive carbohydrate intake and 12?6 % are deemed to be at risk for excessive fat intake (4) . In women over 60 years of age, overweight and obesity rates are even higher -approximately 40 % are overweight and 35?5 % are obese -and a high prevalence of hypertension and diabetes is observed (5) .Moreover, it appears that Mexicans have genetic susceptibility to insulin resistance and to altered carbohydrate and lipid metabolism (6) . It is therefore important to determine dietary factors that are most strongly associated with obesity in this population to provide public awareness and prevention strategies.
