Le cas des danseurs abordé dans cet article permet d’illustrer la manière dont une instance publique, missionnée pour appuyer le développement d’un secteur d’activité, peut tenter d’accompagner les situations de transition professionnelle par l’intermédiaire d’un dispositif centré sur un groupe de parole. Mené à l’aide d’entretiens et d’un travail de participation observante, cette étude met au jour les décalages entre les modalités d’organisation du dispositif et les velléités d’appropriation manifestées par les bénéficiaires. Plus largement, à travers la mise en tension entre « statut principal » et « subordonné », cet article montre les enjeux entourant les manières de penser l’identité professionnelle des artistes et de les catégoriser.
