The identification of nutrient deficiency symptoms in lettuce helps both producers and technical staff to keep the plant nutritional balance in their producing areas. The objective of this study was to evaluate production and describe and record the visual symptoms caused by the isolated or combined shortage of K, Ca, B and Zn in crisphead lettuce grown in hydroponics. The experimental design was completely randomized blocks with four replications and eight treatments, representing the single (K, Ca, B, Zn) and combined (Ca and B, K and Zn, B and Zn) omission of nutrients, with a control treatment containing a complete nutrient solution. We used the crisphead lettuce cultivar Rider Plus. Under Ca shortage, plant growth was reduced and chlorosis appeared in the borders of young leaves. K shortage was the most detrimental to production of shoot fresh and dry matter and root dry matter. Where B was absent, plant growth was limited, the apical dominance was lost and leaves became wrinkled. Plants without Zn showed mild chlorosis in the blade of young leaves, elongation and bending of petioles and reduction in root density. The combined omission of Ca and B slowed down plant growth and induced necrosis at the borders of young leaves, while the combined omission of K and Zn initially induced K deficiency symptoms with reduced growth. When B and Zn were simultaneously subtracted, plants first showed B deficiency symptoms: reduction in plant size as compared to the control treatment and death of the apical bud.

Palavras-chave: gengibre ornamental; nutrientes; plantas ornamentais tropicais Potassium and sodium mineral composition and growth in Zingiber spectabile plant ABSTRACTFor tropical ornamental plants there is no information in the literature regarding the interaction of sodium (Na) with other nutrients, especially potassium (K). Given the above, the objective of this study was to evaluate the symptoms of nutritional deficiencies, growth and mineral composition of plants Zingiber spectabile subjected to K relations: In in nutrient solution. Treatments with different relationships K: Na (mmol L -1 ) were: 6K:0Na, 5K:1Na, 4K:2Na, 3K:3Na, 2K:4Na, 1K:5Na and 0K:6Na. We used the experimental randomized block design with four replications, and the experimental plot was composed of one plant per pot. After 180 days, the plants were harvested, and the biometric indexes and dry weight of different parts of the plants evaluated, and thereafter performed chemical analysis of the plant tissues. Sodium proved beneficial element for the initial growth of Zingiber spectabile. Sodium from 2 mmol L -1 can partly replace potassium in the initial culture of Zingiber spectabile in nutrient solution.
A B S T R A C TThis study analyzed the initial growth of baru in nutrient solutions with individualized omission of mineral nutrients in greenhouse. The experimental design was completely randomized with 13 treatments and four replicates: Complete Hoagland & Arnon solution and with individualized omissions of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, B, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo and Zn. At 60 days the following morphological characteristics were evaluated: height, root collar diameter, number of leaves and number of leaflets. In addition, the Dickson quality index and root/shoot ratio were calculated and root dry matter, shoot dry matter and the contents and accumulations of nutrients in the shoots of the seedlings were analyzed. Analysis of variance of the collected data was performed using the computational program Sisvar. The growth of baru seedlings, except for the variable height, was influenced by the omission of nutrients in the nutrient solution and the main limiting nutrients are K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, and Mo. The absorption of nutrients by baru plants occurs differently under the individualized nutritional omissions applied to the nutrient solution.
