This compilation of ferns and lycophytes in Brazil is an update of the one published in 2010 in Catálogo de Plantas e Fungos do Brasil. The methodology consisted in collecting data from regional checklists, taxonomic revisions, and selected databases. Invited specialists improved the list accessing a website housed at the Jardim Botânico do Rio de Janeiro. The results show 1,253 species: 1,111 of ferns and 142 of lycophytes. This number is 6.5% higher than the previous one (1,176 spp.). The percentage of endemic species decreased from 38.2% to 36.7%. We recognized 36 families and 133 genera (vs. 33 families, 121 genera in 2010). The 10 most diverse families are Pteridaceae (196 spp.), Dryopteridaceae (179), Polypodiaceae (164), Hymenophyllaceae (90), Thelypteridaceae (86), Aspleniaceae (78), Lycopodiaceae (64), Selaginellaceae (55), Anemiaceae (51), and Cyatheaceae (45). The three most diverse genera are still Elaphoglossum (87 spp.), Thelypteris (85), and Asplenium (74). The richest phytogeographic domain continues to be in the Atlantic Rainforest with 883 species which also has the largest number of endemic and threatened species, followed by the Amazon Rainforest (503) ResumoEsta compilação de samambaias e licófitas do Brasil é uma atualização daquela de 2010, no Catálogo de Plantas e Fungos do Brasil.
Comprising about 82% of the extant fern species diversity, Polypodiales are generally believed to have diversified in the Late Cretaceous. We estimated the divergence times of Polypodiales using both penalized likelihood and Bayesian methods, based on a dataset consisting of 208 plastomes representing all 28 families and 14 fossil constraints reflecting current interpretations of fossil record. Our plastome phylogeny recovered the same six major lineages as a recent nuclear phylogeny, but the position of Dennstaedtiineae was different. The present phylogeny showed high resolution of relationships among the families of Polypodiales, especially among those forming the Aspleniineae. The divergence time estimates supported the most recent common ancestor of Polypodiales and its closest relative dating back to the Triassic, establishment of the major lineages in the Jurassic, and a likely accelerated radiation during the late Jurassic and the Early Cretaceous. The estimated divergence patterns of Polypodiales and angiosperms converge to a scenario in which their main lineages were established simultaneously shortly before the onset of the Cretaceous Terrestrial Revolution, and further suggest a pre-Cretaceous hidden history for both lineages. The pattern of simultaneous diversifications shown here elucidate an important gap in our understanding of the Terrestrial Revolution that shaped today's ecosystems.
AbstractThe vascular plants survey of a remnant of semideciduous seasonal forest in the Atlantic Forest Biome was carried out in the ReBio do Grama, municipality of Descoberto, Minas Gerais, through forthnightly trips to collect fertile specimens between August 1999 and December 2004. The angiosperms included 644 species distributed in 370 genera and 100 families, including 6 species new to science, while the lycophytes and ferns included 64 species in 37 genera and 16 families. Fabaceae (55 spp.) was the family with the highest number of species, followed by Rubiaceae (50 spp.), Melastomataceae (28 spp.), Bignoniaceae and Orchidaceae (27 spp. each) and Myrtaceae (25 spp.). Once the survey was concluded, a comparison between it and the floristic composition of other nine areas (3 of seasonal and 6 of dense ombrophilous forest) was performed through multivariate analysis. These 9 sites were chosen as their surveys also included all angiosperm habits rather Flora vascular da Reserva Biológica da Represa do Grama, Minas Gerais, e sua relação florística com outras florestas do sudeste brasileiro IntroduçãoA despeito da grande perda de sua cobertura vegetal, a Florest...
Based on an analysis of five plastid markers (atpA, atpB, rbcL, rps4‐trnS, trnL/trnL‐trnF), we show that Diplazium lechleri is sister to a clade formed by the Hemidictyaceae and Aspleniaceae. Thus, it does not belong to the Athyriaceae where previously classified. A new family, Desmophlebiaceae, and a new genus, Desmophlebium, are described to accommodate this relationship. Morphologically, Desmophlebium is distinguished from Diplazium by the combination of thick 1‐pinnate laminae, entire pinnae, decurrent distal pinnae, conform lamina apices (i.e., the terminal segment is similar to the lateral pinnae), and the presence of a submarginal connecting vein. On the basis of morphology, we also assign Diplazium longisorum to the new family and genus. Accordingly, the new combinations Desmophlebium lechleri and D. longisorum are provided. A lectotype is designated for Diplazium parallelogrammum, a synonym of Desmophlebium lechleri. Desmophlebium grows in humid forests from 125 to 1900 m. Desmophlebium lechleri occurs from Panama to north‐central and northeastern Brazil, and D. longisorum occurs in Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru.
