Aim of our study is to verify the association between the genetic predisposition to hyperinsulinism due to the presence of the insulin gene (INS) I/I genotype and the development of sleep-related breathing disorders (SRBD) in obese children and adolescents. Two hundred and fifty-six obese children and adolescents (125 girls) have been investigated. As initial screening all subjects' mothers filled out the Sleep Disturbances Scale for Children (SDSC). The Sleep-Disordered Breathing (SDB) scale has been taken into account. Successively, a subgroup of 34 patients belonging to the first (14 children) and the last (20 children) SDB score quintiles underwent an overnight polysomnography and the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) was evaluated. All subjects were genotyped for the INS VNTR and fasting insulin levels were evaluated. The population was divided into two groups according to the genotype: the first group was comprehensive of patients homozygotes for class I allele and the second group was composed by class III allele heterozygotes and homozygotes patients. Subjects I/I showed statistically signifIcant higher insulin levels (p<0.001) and SDB scores (p<0.001). Moreover, in the subgroup of patients investigated with polysomnography, class I homozygous subjects showed higher AHI compared to those patients carrying class III allele (p<0.001). Our data support the hypothesis that INS VNTR is associated with the development of SDB among obese children and adolescents.
ObjectiveTo determine and discuss cancer mortality rates in southern Brazil between 1988 and 2012.MethodsThis was a critical review of literature based on analysis of data concerning incidence and mortality of prostate cancer, breast cancer, bronchial and lung cancer, and uterine and ovarian cancer. Data were collected from the online database of the Brazil Instituto Nacional de Câncer José Alencar Gomes da Silva.ResultsThe southern Brazil is the leading region of cancer incidence and mortality. Data on the cancer profile of this population are scarce especially in the States of Santa Catarina and Paraná. We observed inconsistency between data from hospital registers and death recorded.ConclusionBoth cancer incidence and the mortality are high in Brazil. In addition, Brazil has great numbers of registers and deaths for cancer compared to worldwide rates. Regional risk factors might explain the high cancer rates.
Objective: to determine the prevalence of sleep quality and common mental disorder in Nursing professionals and factors associated with sleep change. Method: a cross-sectional, analytical and quantitative study developed with 196 Nursing professionals of a public hospital and a mixed one. Data was collected by means of an instrument of sociodemographic characterization, by the Self-Report Questionnaire 20 and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and were analyzed by descriptive and inferential statistics to identify possible factors associated with sleep changes. Results: sleep changes were identified among the Nursing professionals with a frequency of 76.5% (70.4-82.1). Sleep quality was classified as poor in 41.8% (41.8-55.6) and sleep disorder in 27.6%. (21.4-34.2). The prevalence of common mental disorder was identified in 36.7% (30.1-43.9). The main factor for poor sleep quality was the presence of common mental disorder (Odds Ratio: 5.15; p<0.001). Conclusion: sleep changes were prevalent and the characteristics of the work environment and the presence of mental disorder showed relevance in the changes.
Brazil is among the biggest pesticide consumers in the world, with its population severely exposed to tons of such substances, both because of environmental contamination and occupational use. The health consequences of pesticide exposure are well-documented, but still sparse regarding Brazilian population. This study systematically reviewed the Brazilian studies published that address the relationship between exposure to pesticides and health problems in the Brazilian population. Also, information about pesticide use in Brazil is provided. The included studies showed that exposure to pesticides has a relevant impact on the health of the Brazilian population, regardless of age and gender, and on workers in rural areas or not. Most poisoning events seem to result from the continuous use of pesticides, whether occupationally or environmentally, characterizing a public health problem. The major consequences reported in literature were damage to the central nervous system, cancer, deleterious effects on rural workers' health, intoxications, malformations, and endocrine changes. These findings point out the need to understand the impact of chronic exposure to pesticides on severely exposed people and highlight the importance of creating public policies to protect them and avoid disease occurrence.
Umuarama, v. 17, n. 4, p. 249-252, out./dez. 2014. Agaricus brasiliensis. ZINC BIOACCUMULATION IN Agaricus subrufescens MYCELIUMABSTRACT: Fungi basidiomycetes have the ability to bioaccumulate heavy metals, but there are few studies on zinc bioaccumulation in the mycelium of Agaricus subrufescens. The objective of this study is to evaluate the zinc bioaccumulation in the mycelium of A. subrufescens cultivated in solid and liquid culture media. Mycelium was grown on solid or liquid medium in malt extract base added with ZnSO 4 to obtain zero, 2.5, 5, 7.5, 10, 15 or 20-ppm zinc. Mycelial biomass and zinc bioaccumulation were determined 14 days after inoculation in the culture media. Addition of zinc in culture medium inhibited mycelial growth and induced biomass bioaccumulation both in solid and in liquid culture. Additions higher than 7.5-ppm zinc completely inhibited mycelial growth in culture medium. Mycelial growth in liquid culture presented greater increase of growth inhibition with the addition of zinc and greater bioaccumulation than in solid medium. KEYWORDS: Agaricus blazei.
