Objective: To analyze the interfaces between mental illness, based on common mental disorder screening, and sociodemographic, health and life habits aspects of nursing workers at COVID-19 units. Method: A mixed methods study, carried out with 327 nursing workers from COVID-19 units of seven public and philanthropic, medium and large hospitals in Brazil. The collection included a socio-employment, health and lifestyle questionnaire, the Self-Reporting Questionnaire, and interviews. chi-square and Fisher’s exact tests were applied to quantitative data and thematic content analysis, with the help of NVivo in the qualitative ones. Results: Common mental disorders were screened in 35.5% of the sample and were associated with female sex (p = 0.004), age up to 40 years (p = 0.003), nurse (p = 0.014), reporting previous illness (p = 0.003), using psychoactive drugs (p < 0.001), medication that was not used before the pandemic (p < 0.001) and reporting poor sleep/eating quality (p < 0.001). The impacts of the pandemic on social and family life presented interfaces with mental illness. Conclusion: The presence of psychological illness is suggested, possibly associated with the repercussions of the pandemic on work and personal life.

Short Sleep Duration as a Risk Factor for Depression, Anxiety and Fatigue in Patients with Leukemia

Objective Our study aimed to investigate the level of depression, anxiety, and fatigue in patients with leukemias, and analyze the influence of sleep duration on the mental symptoms of patients with leukemias. Methods A total of 127 patients were enrolled in our study and completed the questionnaire survey. Self-Assessment Depression Scale (SDS), Self-Assessment Anxiety Scale (SAS), and the Fatigue Scale-14 (FS-14) were adopted. The patient’s lifestyle information, including exercise, alcohol abuse, and smoking, was obtained from the patient’s self-report. Results Depression score of patients with sleep duration >8 hours (long duration group) was 56.21±11.63, which was significantly lower than that of patients sleep duration between 6 and 8 hours (medium duration group) with 59.61±8.77 and patients sleep <6 hours (short duration group) with 64.82±6.42 (P = 0.007). Similarly, the anxiety score of long duration group, medium duration group and short duration group was 45.36±11.41, 48.26±6.96 and 53.53±5.87, respectively (P = 0.005). The fatigue score of short duration group is 8.47±2.45, which is higher than others (P = 0.046). To further identify the relationship, we evaluated physical fatigue and mental fatigue levels in patients with or without symptoms of depression. We found that patients with symptoms of depression have a higher score both in physical fatigue and mental fatigue (all p < 0.001). Similar trend was observed in patients with or without symptoms of anxiety (all p < 0.001). However, alzhough patients with leukemia in long duration group have the highest score of physical fatigue (p = 0.016), no significant difference in mental fatigue was found in different sleeping duration group (p = 0.587). Furthermore, multivariate analyses were conducted and revealed that sleep duration was the independent factor associated with depression (OR = 0.270, P = 0.003) and anxiety (OR = 0.473, P = 0.010). Conclusion For leukemia patients with short sleep duration, a prompt evaluation of their level of depression, anxiety, and fatigue and the initiation of timely interventions is essential.

Background: The quality of sleep has an effect on the health of clinicians and the quality of patient care. Maintaining cognitive function/mood, facilitation of glucose metabolism, and strengthening of the immune system are among the roles that adequate sleep may contribute. Poor sleep quality is multifactorial, and studies had shown inconsistencies in the factors that contribute to the development of this poor sleep quality. The prevalence of poor sleep quality among clinicians working in the critical care unit and operation theater in the study setting was not investigated yet. Objective: The objective of this study was conducted for the purpose of assessing the quality of sleep and associated factors among clinicians working in the critical care unit and operation theater. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from 15 May to 15 June 2022. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire from 421 clinicians selected by simple random sampling techniques. Sleep quality was measured by the Pittsburg sleep quality index. The data were entered into Epi-data and exported to SPSS. Frequency and percentage were used for the descriptive analysis. Binary and multivariate logistic regression analysis were used to identify factors associated with poor quality of sleep. The strength of the association was measured with an OR within the 95% CI and P-value of <0.05. Result: About half 220 (52.3%) of the study participants age between 25 and 30 year old and the majority 321 (76.2%) of them were males. The prevalence of poor sleeps quality was 81.5% (95% CI: 77.9–85.5). Working night shift (AOR: 3.37, 95% CI: 1.754–6.484), having depressive symptoms (AOR: 3.25, 95% CI: 1.485–7.147) and having no regular exercises (AOR: 0.299, 95% CI: 0.166–0.537) were predisposing factors for poor sleep quality. Conclusion and Recommendation: The prevalence of poor sleep quality among clinicians working in the ICU and operation room was high. Clinicians who had no regular exercise, who worked in night shift, and who had depressive symptoms were associated with poor quality of sleep. Clinicians should have an awareness on the symptoms of depression, implement sleep hygiene education programs and promoting regular exercise. The authors recommend healthcare policy makers for improving working schedules.
