Onychomychosis, a nail fungus infection is the most frequent nail ailment, constituting about half of all nail disorders. It can be caused by dermatophytes, non-dermatophytes, yeasts and Prothoteca spp. Methods include 5407 samples of patients with suspected onychomycosis, studied from January 2002 to December 2006, by direct mycological examination and fungi culture. The diagnosis of onychomycosis was confirmed in samples from 3822 direct mycological and/or culture positive. The diagnosis was established by culture for fungi. Among the 1.428 identified agents, the dermatophytes were responsible for 68.6% (N = 980) of cases, followed by yeasts with 27.6% (N = 394), non-dermatophytes fungi with 2.2% (N = 31), Prothoteca spp with 0.1% (N = 2), and associations with 1.5% (N = 22). Females were more affected, with 66% (N = 2527) of cases, and the most affected age group ranged from 31 to 60 years of age (median 47 years). Fungal microbiota is often changed in the world, both quantitatively and qualitatively, and is affected by several environmental factors. Thus, the periodic review of the composition of this microbiota is important to evaluate the epidemiology and thus proportion a better therapeutic response.
Palavras-chave: Fotoproteção, Câncer de pele, Exposição solar, Radiação ultravioleta, Vitamina D. ABSTRACTThe incidence of skin cancer is increasing every year. It is known that among other factors, solar radiation is the main responsible for the development of this pathology. Prevention, made by photoprotection, would have great impact in this scenario. However, the guidelines on how to protect themselves from the sun's harmful effects should be consistent with the sunlight of the region, the habits of the population and the phototype skin. The concepts of photoprotection were defined by European and North American entities and should not be played for Brazil at random, as the solar incidence in Brazil is much higher, people have different skin types and the habit of sun exposure is much more frequent. Therefore, it is necessary to draw up own concepts for Brazil and raise awareness about the dangers of solar radiation, so that the incidence of skin cancer can be definitely reduced. This review aims to show the relationship of solar radiation in Brazil with the skin of Brazilian and to highlight the importance of sun protection for this population. With this purpose, it was made a survey of original articles, literature reviews , Brazilian and international consensus and dermatology books. Keywords: Photoprotection, Skin cancer, Sun exposure, Ultraviolet radiation, D vitamin.
ABSTRACTObjective: The objective of this article was to analyze and trace the epidemiological profile of patients seen and diagnosed with leprosy in the city of Itajubá, south of Minas Gerais in the period from 2005 to 2013. Materials and Methods: The research was based on an epidemiological, retrospective, bibliographic and documentary study in the city of Itajubá, Minas Gerais, in the period of 2005-2013. It was also obtained registration of all types of clinical forms, degrees of disability at diagnosis, the disease sequelae and mainly failures in collecting info. In the analysis, there was a predominance of multibacillary form being present in all clinical forms. Conclusion: A better analysis of contacts is needed to better diagnose all patients with the disease. In addition to this is the fact that there is scarcity of information in the reporting forms, making it impossible to demonstrate the reality of the population studied. Keywords: Leprosy, Epidemiology, Incidence
Daily photoprotection (PhP) is essential in preventing harmful effects from solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure. For that reason, we interviewed students aged from 4 to 20 years old about their knowledge on sun exposure and PhP habits. Age, sex, family income, and skin phototype were statistically related to the proposed questions. Our results show that Brazilian youngsters do not have the habit of wearing long-sleeved clothing (<15% in summer), sunglasses (0.0%), or hats (2.1%). More than 40% had no knowledge about ultraviolet index (UVI), while another 30% misinterpreted what it is. Less than half of all students wear sunscreen when out in the sun. Despite this low PhP use-rate, more than 90% know that UVR causes skin cancers. Low income was the factor that showed the greatest number of significant relationships with respect to the lack of PhP. The findings suggest that current traditional PhP campaigns are not efficient. We propose that PhP should be part of school curricula from elementary school onwards. After all, the lack of educational programs predisposes these youngsters to an increased chance of skin diseases in the future.
Background: Excessive and continuous exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) can cause skin cancer (SC), photoaging, and cataracts. Photoprotection (PhP) is the most important tool in preventing against these harmful effects. Elementary and high school students should be targeted in PhP campaigns because the solar radiation that youngers receive increases the risk of SC in adulthood. However, PhP policies are scarce in developing countries. Objectives: To evaluate the use and knowledge of PhP with youngsters living in tropical regions. Methods: 2,844 students aged from 4 to 20 years-old were interviewed about their knowledge on sun exposure and PhP habits. Age, sex, family income and skin phototype were statistically related to the proposed questions. Results: Brazilian youngsters do not have the habit of wearing long-sleeved clothing (<15% in summer), nor sunglasses (0.0%), and hats (2.1%). More than 40% had no knowledge about UVI while another 30% misinterpret what it is. Less than half of all students wear sunscreen when out in the sun. Despite this low PhP use-rate, more than 90% know that UVR causes SC. Income was the factor that showed the greatest number of significant relationships respect to PhP. Conclusions: Children and adolescents showed little knowledge about the sun exposure effects and lack PhP use. The lack of educational programs predisposes these youngsters to an increased chance of SC in the future. These results suggest that PhP campaigns should be part of school curricula from elementary school onwards.
