This study is the first to report BMP prevalence in mainland China. Our results indicate that a simple pre-treatment interview could provide data allowing the dentist to identify children with special dental behavioural needs.

Objective We aimed to investigate the association between the ABO blood groups and the risk of coronary artery disease (CAD) and myocardial infartion (MI) in a young Taiwanese population. Methods We retrospectively recruited 277 consecutive subjects (men younger than 45 years and women younger than 55 years) who underwent coronary angiography (136 with documented CAD and 129 without CAD) at our center, between 2005 and 2008. Their ABO blood groups were determined using standard agglutination techniques. Results Patients with CAD showed a significantly different blood group distribution (O, 30.1%; A, 39.7%; B, 26.5%; AB, 3.7%) than that shown by the controls (O, 42.6%; A, 24.0%; B, 27.1%; AB, 6.2%; p=0.032). Patients with blood group A had a greater risk of CAD and MI than those with non-A blood groups (OR= 2.08, 95% CI=1.23-3.54; OR=2.21, 95% CI=1.19-4.09, respectively). After adjustment for common cardiovascular risk factors such as age, gender, hypertension, cigarette smoking, diabetes mellitus, body mass index, family history of CAD, and lipid profiles; blood group A remained significantly associated with an increased risk of CAD and MI (OR=2.61, 95% CI 1.11-6.14, p=0.028; OR=3.53, 95% CI=1.21-10.29, p= 0.021, respectively). Conclusion Our findings suggest that blood group A is an independent risk factor for CAD and MI in young people in Taiwan.

This study aimed to identify circulating influenza virus strains and vulnerable population groups and investigate the distribution and seasonality of influenza viruses in Ningbo, China. Then, an autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model for prediction was established. Influenza surveillance data for 2006–2014 were obtained for cases of influenza-like illness (ILI) (n = 129,528) from the municipal Centers for Disease Control and virus surveillance systems of Ningbo, China. The ARIMA model was proposed to predict the expected morbidity cases from January 2015 to December 2015. Of the 13,294 specimens, influenza virus was detected in 1148 (8.64%) samples, including 951 (82.84%) influenza type A and 197 (17.16%) influenza type B viruses; the influenza virus isolation rate was strongly correlated with the rate of ILI during the overall study period (r = 0.20, p < 0.05). The ARIMA (1, 1, 1) (1, 1, 0)12 model could be used to predict the ILI incidence in Ningbo. The seasonal pattern of influenza activity in Ningbo tended to peak during the rainy season and winter. Given those results, the model we established could effectively predict the trend of influenza-related morbidity, providing a methodological basis for future influenza monitoring and control strategies in the study area.

Genetic control of parthenocarpy, a desirable trait in edible fruit with hard seeds, has been extensively studied. However, the molecular mechanism of parthenocarpic fruit development in eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) is still unclear. To provide insights into eggplant parthenocarpy, the transcriptomic profiles of a natural parthenocarpic (PP05) and two non-parthenocarpic (PnP05 and GnP05) eggplant lines were analyzed using RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) technology. These sequences were assembled into 38925 unigenes, of which 22683 had an annotated function and 3419 were predicted as novel genes or from alternative splicing. 4864 and 1592 unigenes that were identified as DEGs between comparison groups PP05 vs PnP05 and PP05 vs GnP05, respectively. 506 common DEGs were found contained in both comparison groups, including 258 up-regulated and 248 down-regulated genes. Functional enrichment analyses identified many common or specific biological processes and gene set potentially associated with plant development. The most pronounced findings are that differentially regulated genes potentially-related with auxin signaling between parthenocarpic and non-parthenocarpic eggplants, e.g. calcium-binding protein PBP1 and transcription factor E2FB, which mediate the auxin distribution and auxin-dependent cell division, respectively, are up-regulated in the PP05; whereas homologs of GH3.1 and AUX/IAA, which are involved in inactivation of IAA and interference of auxin signaling, respectively, are down-regulated in PP05. Furthermore, gibberellin and cytokinin signaling genes and genes related to flower development were found differentially regulated between these eggplant lines. The present study provides comprehensive transcriptomic profiles of eggplants with or without parthenocarpic capacity. The information will deepen our understanding of the molecular mechanisms of eggplant parthenocarpy. The DEGs, especially these filtered from PP05 vs PnP05 + GnP05, will be valuable for further investigation of key genes involved in the parthenocarpic fruit development and genomics-assisted breeding.

MicroRNA (miR)-138 generally has a suppressive role in various human cancer types; however, its role and the underlying mechanisms in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) have remained to be elucidated. The present study assessed the clinical significance and regulatory mechanisms of miR-138 in LSCC progression. Reverse-transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction analysis indicated that miR-138 was significantly downregulated in LSCC tissues and cell lines. In addition, the decreased expression of miR-138 was significantly associated with poor differentiation, lymph node metastasis and advanced clinical stage of LSCC. Restoration of miR-138 expression caused a significant decrease in the proliferation of Hep-2 LSCC cells, while knockdown of miR-138 significantly promoted Hep-2 cell proliferation. A luciferase reporter assay further identified enhancer of zeste homologue 2 (EZH2) as a direct target gene of miR-138, and the protein expression of EZH2 was negatively regulated by miR-138 in Hep-2 cells. Furthermore, overexpression of EZH2 eliminated the suppressive effects of miR-138 on Hep-2 cell proliferation via activation of phosphoinositide-3 kinase (PI3K)/AKT signaling. In addition, EZH2 was found to be significantly upregulated in LSCC tissues and to be inversely correlated to the miR-138 levels. The results of the present study demonstrated that miR-138 inhibits the proliferation of LSCC cells, at least partly via targeting EZH2 and inhibiting PI3 K/AKT signaling. The present study highlighted the clinical significance of the miR-138/EZH2 axis in LSCC.

These results showed that lung cancer gene-targeted deep capture sequencing is not efficient enough to achieve ideal sensitivity by simply increasing the sequencing depth of ctDNA from early candidates. The sequencing could not be evaluated hotspot mutations in the early tumour stage. Nevertheless, a larger cohort is required to optimize this model, and more techniques may be incorporated to benefit the SPN high-risk population.
