We present results of the electro-optical effect in 90° twisted nematic cells of pristine and doped liquid crystals under an applied dc voltage. The doped cells were fabricated with a minute addition of either buckminsterfullerene C60 or multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Investigated were the switching behaviors as well as the hystereses and time evolutions of both the optical transmittance and electrical capacitance of the display samples. It is shown that doping with nanotubes can effectively reduce the dc driving voltage and improve the switching behavior.

This study showed that approximately one-quarter of 81,650 outpatients who visited a medical centre in Taiwan over a period of 3 months in 2004 had potential DDIs. We observed independent increases in potential DDIs per person in association with aging and increasing number of prescribed drugs. Furthermore, a significant interaction between these two factors was observed: the effect of aging on the prevalence of potential DDIs increased as the number of prescribed drugs increased. Potential DDIs in outpatients can be reduced by minimizing the number of drugs prescribed following careful consideration of both their benefits and risks, particularly in the aging population.

Mechanized silica nanoparticles, equipped with pillar[5]arene-[2]pseudorotaxane nanovalves, operate in biological media to trap cargos within their nanopores, but release them when the pH is lowered or a competitive binding agent is added. Although cargo size plays an important role in cargo loading, cargo charge-type does not appear to have any significant influence on the amount of cargo loading or its release. These findings open up the possibility of using pillar[n]arene and its derivatives for the formation of robust and dynamic nanosystems that are capable of performing useful functions.

BackgroundDespite the impact of medication literacy (ML) on patients’ safe use of medications, existing instruments are mostly for general health literacy measurement or designed for specific disease populations, with few specifically designed for ML.ObjectiveTo develop and validate the first Chinese medication literacy measure (ChMLM).MethodsThe ChMLM was developed by a multidisciplinary and bilingual expert panel and subsequently pilot‐tested. The final version had 17 questions in four sections: vocabulary, non‐prescription drug, prescription drug and drug advertisement. Face‐to‐face interviews were administered in a convenience sample of adults with diverse sociodemographic characteristics. Internal consistency was assessed by Cronbach's alpha. Content validity was confirmed by the expert panel, and hypothesis testing was performed to assess construct validity.ResultsA total of 634 adults were interviewed. The mean (SD) total ChMLM score was 13.0 (2.8). The internal validity was acceptable (Cronbach's alpha=0.72). Nine of the ten a priori hypotheses were fulfilled. Younger age, higher income and higher education levels were significantly associated with a higher ChMLM score. Furthermore, higher scores on the ChMLM were associated with higher confidence or less difficulty in writing, reading, speaking and listening abilities in a health‐care encounter. No association was found between ChMLM total scores and frequency of doctor's visits.ConclusionThe ChMLM is a valid and reliable ML measure. It may help pharmacists and other health‐care providers to target patients and problem areas that need interventions with the ultimate goal of preventing medication errors and harm.
