Dans les années 70, les études féministes se constituent, en France, dans le Mouvement de libération des femmes, en marge des institutions académiques. Elles ne s’institutionnalisent qu’en 1982-1983, après la victoire de la gauche. Malgré l’affaiblissement du féminisme militant, les recherches « sur les femmes » (années 1980) puis sur le « genre » (années 1990) se développent sans atteindre le stade d’une véritable reconnaissance. L’amélioration constatée depuis 1995 est certainement le fruit de la persévérance. Le militantisme n’a pas disparu : transformé, professionnalisé, il se focalise désormais sur l’intégration de la problématique « genre » en sciences humaines.
