The potential use of acanthocephalans as bioindicators of Lead (Pb) pollution in Sampaloc Lake, Laguna, Philippines was investigated. Nile tilapias (Oreochromis niloticus) were collected and Pb concentrations were determined in fish tissues and in their acanthocephalan parasites, Acanthogyrus sp. Significantly higher levels of Pb were detected in the parasites relative to the fish host tissues (p = 0.001). Bioaccumulation capacity of the parasites against fish tissues were 102, 119, and 147 times higher than the fish intestine, liver, and muscles, respectively. Pb sensitivity of the parasites was quantified by exact logistic analysis showing higher odds of Pb detection ranging from 18 to 45 folds (p = 0.001-0.009). Interestingly, infected fish showed significantly lower Pb concentration in their tissues compared to uninfected fish (p = 0.001), suggesting parasites were able to sequester Pb and served as active biosinks. The Pb levels in the parasites were also hundred folds higher (988 times) relative to the ambient waters, indicating a potential role of fish parasites as metal biosinks in aquatic ecosystems.
RESUMORealizaram-se dois experimentos com 1008 pintos machos Ag-Ross 508 em cada um deles. No primeiro, avaliou-se o desempenho de frangos de corte alimentados com diferentes níveis de gérmen integral de milho (GIM) na dieta de um a sete dias de idade (fase pré-inicial). No segundo, avaliou-se o desempenho e o rendimento de carcaça no período de oito a 47 dias. As aves foram alojadas em 16 unidades, divididas em quatro tratamentos, de acordo com os níveis de GIM, em substituição ao milho na dieta (0%, 33%, 67% e 100%), e quatro repetições de 63 aves cada. Utilizou-se o delineamento inteiramente ao acaso, e os dados foram analisados por regressão polinomial. O GIM não foi um bom alimento para a fase pré-inicial. A inclusão recomendada do GIM foi de 21,9% e 22,5% nos períodos de oito a 21 dias e de 22 a 38 dias, respectivamente. Não houve restrição do uso do GIM na fase final.
RESUMO: Objetivou-se avaliar a adição de 0%; 0,01%; 0,02% e 0,03% de ácido ascórbico na alimentação de codornas japonesas em postura na região tropical sobre o consumo, desempenho produtivo e a qualidade de ovos. Foram utilizadas 80 codornas japonesas, distribuídas em quatro níveis de adição de ácido ascórbico. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi inteiramente casualizado e os dados das variáveis estudadas foram submetidos a análise de variância e as diferenças observadas foram analisadas por meio de regressão a 5% de significância. A adição de 0%; 0,01%; 0,02% e 0,03% de ácido ascórbico na alimentação de codornas não influenciou o consumo de matéria seca (CMS), matéria orgânica (CMO) e proteína bruta (CPB), expressos em g/ animal/dia; g/kg 0,75 e % do peso corporal. Os valores médios do CMS, CMO e CPB foram de 46,53; 44,00 e 11,00 g/animal/dia, respectivamente. Porém, houve efeito quadrático no consumo de fibra em detergente neutro (CFDN) das aves, e o CFDN máximo foi de 9,19 g/animal/dia obtido para o nível de adição de 0,01% de ácido ascórbico na ração de codornas japonesas em postura. A adição do ácido ascórbico na alimentação de codornas em postura não alterou (P>0,05) a produção de ovos e a produtividade, com valores médios observados para a produção de ovos foi de 3,06 ovos/ gaiola/dia e 0,77 ovos/animal/dia, e produtividade média foi de 76,50%. A adição de 0%; 0,01%; 0,02% e 0,03% de ácido ascórbico na alimentação de codornas em postura não alterou o peso dos ovos, das gemas e albúmens, e o diâmetro dos ovos e das gemas. Contudo, a adição de ácido ascórbico na alimentação das codornas propiciou efeito quadrático (P<0,05) para a altura dos ovos e peso da casca dos ovos. Os menores valores da altura e peso da casca dos ovos foram de 2,99 mm e 1,25 g, respectivamente, para os níveis de adição de 0,017% e 0,023% de ácido ascórbico nas rações de codornas. Entretanto, para espessura da casca e altura da gema dos ovos apresentaram um efeito quadrático (P<0,05) com a adição do ácido ascórbico, com ponto de máximo de 0,031 mm e 1,42 mm, respectivamente para os níveis de adição de 0,024% e 0,017% de ácido ascórbico nas rações. A adição de até 0,03% de ácido ascórbico na alimentação de codornas em postura na região tropical, não altera o consumo dos nutrientes, a produção e produtividade dos ovos. Aim:The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of Gabing San Fernando (Xanthosoma spp.) corms as partial carbohydrate replacement for maize in finisher broiler production.Materials and Methods:The completely randomized design was utilized to investigate the effects of three finisher poultry diets prepared in varying amounts of cocoyam-corm meal set at 0% (control), 25%, and 50% (experimental) replacement levels.Results:There were no significant differences (p≥0.05) as to mortality and body weight measurements between control and experimental groups. Similarly, the mean weights of selected internal organs and condemnable carcasses among treatment groups did not show any significant differences (p≥0.05). In terms of the average feed intakes, birds from 50%-cocoyam group had the highest mean value and were found to be statistically different (p≥0.01) from both control and 25%-cocoyam groups. However, feed conversion ratio did not significantly differ (p≥0.05) among three groups. Higher feed costs were associated with the 50%-cocoyam treatment diet, which was only consistent with higher feed inputs. Thus, the group fed with 50%-cocoyam meal had significantly higher total mean production costs (p<0.005) per bird, when other expenses were taken into account. The production costs for the group given 25%-cocoyam meal did not significantly differ (p≥0.05) from the control group.Conclusion:Partial replacement of maize with cocoyam-corm meal at 25% level was acceptable since inclusion at this level did not adversely affect the production performance of finisher broilers in terms of growth rate, mortality rate, and feeding efficiency. The use of cocoyam meal as nonconventional and alternative carbohydrate source in poultry diet presents positive economic implications, especially to smallhold farmers from the developing countries, like the Philippines.

This study examined the emotional intelligence (EI) and sport performance (SP) of college varsity athletes from the Laguna State Polytechnic University. A total of 112 athlete-respondents were involved in the cross-sectional survey, consisting 98 basketball players and 14 swimmers, representing the open-skill and closed-skill athletes, respectively. The perceived levels of EI and SP of the athletes were assessed through self-and coach-rating, using a structured questionnaire with Likert scale items. In general, both open-skill and closed-skill athletes often exhibited high EI levels with respect to four domains: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management. It was found that majority of the athletes had EI scores within the effective functioning or enhanced skills level. The possible relationship between the athletes' level of EI and SP was examined via the Spearman's correlation. Results revealed that the SP of basketball players (open-skill athletes) was significantly correlated (P<0.01) to their self-awareness (r=0.353), self-management (r=0.319), social awareness (r=0.393), and relationship management (r=0.411). In general, it can be deduced that the SP level of the open-skill athletes appeared to improve with increasing EI level. On the other hand, significant relationships did not exist (P>0.05) between the SP of swimmers (closed-skill athletes) and their EI with respect to the four domains. Implementation of motivational programs aimed at enhancing the EI levels among open-skilled athletes are recommended to boost their SP during the game.
The growth of the aquaculture sector leads to a demand for sustainable feed ingredients. Prebiotics are potential sustainable feed ingredients that can promote the improved performance of aquaculture species without the use of antimicrobials. This study investigated the potential of Azolla pinnata as a candidate prebiotic source. Prebiotic characteristics and dietary effect of commercial diet (CD) with varying pulverised azolla (PA) inclusion was evaluated. Results showed that PA (9.40% moisture) constitutes around 16.1% ash, 22.3% crude fibre, 20.9% crude protein, 1.7% crude fat and 29.6% nitrogen-free extract. Crude xylan and cellulose content of PA were 13.7% and 12.6% dry matter (DM) respectively. Growth of Lactobacillus rhamnosus in PA-supplemented MRS broth remarkably improved after 4 to 6 hours of incubation. Feeding trials results revealed that PA inclusion had no adverse effect on average survival of milkfish fingerlings, albeit significant improvement (p < 0.01) was noted in group fed with 2% PA-replaced CD in terms of the total weight gain (119.9%), specific growth rate (2.62% day–1) and feed efficiency (79.9%). The present study demonstrated the prebiotic activity of PA, as well as its potential use as dietary feed component for improved growth and feed efficiency of cultured milkfish.
