During the eighteenth century, Portuguese settlers in Amazonia captured thousands of turtles and crushed millions of their eggs. These turtles, especially the Giant South American River Turtle (Podocnemis expansa), gave these settlers two essential resources: meat and oil. Though there is a rich historiography on turtle hunting, important social and environmental dimensions of the practice in Amazonia during the colonial period have been overlooked. In this paper we focus on how turtles played a key role in the diet and domestic needs of Portuguese settlers in the Amazon rainforest and explore the shape and magnitude of colonialism’s impact on these animals. The turtles became prime targets for Portuguese settlers because they were abundant and had characteristics and behavior that made them easy prey. Though P. expansa did not become extinct, Portuguese hunting had enduring impacts on their distribution and abundance that merit consideration.
ABSTRACT Tobacco (Nicotiana sp.) was one of the New World´s botanical elements that most whetted the curiosity of many travelers, scholars, physicians and natural philosophers on both sides of the Atlantic. The plants of the Nicotiana genus quickly gained notoriety among men of letters. The hiatus between the first descriptions about the predicates of tobacco and its introduction in Europe was considerably short. It is possible that the rumors about the properties of tobacco have arrived in Europe at the same time as the first leaves or seeds. Many of these reports included information about its use by indigenous peoples. Tobacco's relevance in the Amerindian cultures raised in Europeans, even with all cultural barriers, a considerable interest for its potential applications and an overwhelming willingness to justify its use.
Man, since its origin, aims to learn or work with some ability to survive and communicate. Since the discovery of fire, expression through rock art, through cuneiform writing, and through the Gutemberg press until we reach cyberspace, today, techniques and technologies have changed and evolved to improve the quality of life for man and society where you live. Thus, it is visible that changes have happened and continue to happen, constantly, in several areas. Technologies were changing and, as a great motivating element, allied to them, was communication, which aims at the exchange of information between individuals. This work proposes a reflection around some concepts and discussions that involve information and communication technologies (ICTs). The objective is to bring a brief history of the evolution of ICTs over time and to present a relationship of this trajectory with the educational context that contemporary society is experiencing (pandemic, home office, remote education). The methodology used in the production of this article was bibliographic research, reviewing literature on the subject and investigating the current discussions involving the theme. The text was co-authored, using the Google Drive document text toolwithin the virtual environment and remotely, marking the importance of ICTs in contemporary times, both for research and for education. Therefore, it is considered that technologies are in constant evolution, what was unthinkable, considered impossible to happen is being seen in the present and, for the future, much remains to come thanks to the changes generated by the technologies.
AbstractWas Charles Darwin, the real author of the theory of the evolutionary process? In fact, Darwin discusses in his works, specifically the origin of natural selection, and not the origin of species. Three years earlier from the publication of Darwin's article, another naturalist, Alfred Russel Wallace, published a paper proposing that all living species descended from a single common ancestor. Wallace was the first to perceive that each margin of the Amazonian rivers could be inhabited by different species of monkeys. In 1858, Wallace summarized the theory of natural selection but, instead of immediately send the discovery to publication, he sent it to Darwin that, shortly after, published The Origin of Species. Therefore, this article aims to discuss which would the contributions of Wallace for evolutionary theories.
