A novel kind of quantum dots, sulfur quantum dots (S dots), is synthesized by simply treating sublimated sulfur powders with alkali using polyethylene glycol-400 as passivation agents. The synthesized S dots exhibit excellent aqueous dispersibility, eminent photostability and temperature dependent photoluminescence (PL). An "assemble-fission" mechanism is proposed for the S dots formation in which "assembling" and "fission" are involved and contest each other. The ultimate morphologies of the S dots are dependent on the balance of the two forces. Guided by the assemble-fission mechanism, weakening the assembling effect is beneficial for obtaining monodisperse S dots, which can be achieved by pretreating of sulfur powder with nitric acid. PL wavelength of the S dots has been successfully tuned between green and blue light (from 550 to 440 nm) by simply controlling reaction time. A satisfactory quantum yield of 3.8% is obtained. Significant electrochemiluminescence of the S dots is observed in an annihilation reaction. Chemiluminescence from the S dots has been observed by direct oxidation. Taking advantage of unique and inherent antimicrobial activity of the sulfur particles, it is believed that this new emerging luminescent nanomaterial is highly promising in the development of new types of optoelectronic devices and tracer for live cells, in vivo imaging and diagnostics.

This Feature simply introduces the history and mechanism of classical electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) systems for the detection of biomolecules, highlights new advances and emerging fields of the ECL biosensing with recent illustrative examples, and presents the challenges and perspectives of ECL biosensing.

A simply and high selectively electrochemical method for simultaneous determination of hydroquinone and catechol has been developed at a glassy carbon electrode modified with multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNT). It was found that the oxidation peak separation of hydroquinone and catechol and the oxidation currents of hydroquinone and catechol greatly increase at MWNT modified electrode in 0.20 M acetate buffer solution (pH 4.5). The oxidation peaks of hydroquinone and catechol merge into a large peak of 302 mV (vs. Ag/AgCl, 3 M NaCl) at bare glassy carbon electrode. The two corresponding well-defined oxidation peaks of hydroquinone in the presence of catechol at MWNT modified electrode occur at 264 mV and 162 mV, respectively. Under the optimized condition, the oxidation peak current of hydroquinone is linear over a range from 1.0 Â 10 À6 M to 1.0 Â 10 À4 M hydroquinone in the presence of 1.0 Â 10 À4 M catechol with the detection limit of 7.5 Â 10 À7 M and the oxidation peak current of catechol is linear over a range from 6.0 Â 10 À7 M to 1.0 Â 10 À4 M catechol in the presence of 1.0 Â 10 À4 M hydroquinone with the detection limit of 2.0 Â 10 À7 M. The proposed method has been applied to simultaneous determination of hydroquinone and catechol in a water sample with simplicity and high selectivity.

A highly selective electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) biosensor for the detection of target single-strand DNA (ss-DNA) was developed using hairpin DNA as the recognition element and ruthenium complex as the signal-producing compound. The ECL-based DNA biosensor was fabricated by self-assembling the ECL probe of thiolated hairpin DNA tagged with ruthenium complex on the surface of a gold electrode. In the absence of target ss-DNA, the ECL probe immobilized on the surface of the electrode was in the folded configuration in which its termini were held in close proximity to the electrode, and thus a strong ECL signal could be generated. In the presence of target ss-DNA, a stem-loop of the ECL probe on the electrode was converted into a linear double-helix configuration due to hybridization, resulting in the tag moving away from the electrode surface, which in turn decreased the ECL signal. The ECL intensity of the DNA biosensor generated a "switch off" mode, which decreased with an increase of the concentration of target DNA, and a detection limit of 9 x 10(-11) M complementary target ss-DNA was achieved. Single mismatched target ss-DNA was effectively discriminated from complementary target ss-DNA. The effect of different loop lengths of the hairpin DNA on the selectivity of the ECL DNA biosensor has been investigated. This work demonstrated that the sensitivity and specificity of an ECL DNA biosensor could be greatly improved using a hairpin DNA species which has an appropriate stem and loop length as the recognition element.
