The conservationist community is giving special attention to epigean insects due to their importance in the preservation of terrestrial habitats. This work analysed the diversity, richness, abundance and similarity at the soil surface of Coleoptera composition among five environments: native forest, native grassland, Pinus elliottii plantation, Eucalyptus saligna plantation and degraded area by soil use in southern Brazil, from October 2004 to October 2005. A total of 1,812 individuals were collected, attributed to 45 morph-species and 14 families. The higher richness and abundance were observed in native forest (31 species and 782 individuals) and the lower richness and abundance in degraded area (14 species, 86 individuals). Scarabaeidae was the richest family captured, with nine morph-species, and the most frequent family was Nitidulidae (1,113 individuals). According to the Shannon-Wiener index, the degraded area had smaller diversity in relation to the native forest, E. saligna and Pinus elliottii plantations. No difference in diversity between evaluated areas was found for the Simpson diversity index. The most dominant site was the degraded. The correlation between the total number of morph-species captured was not different to the degraded area and the P. elliottii monoculture (r = 0.47) and the correlation between the total individuals number was not significant between native forest and native grassland (r = 0.46) and between degraded areas and the other sites. According to the Jaccard Similarity Index, the greatest similarity for the organism composition occurred between P. elliottii plantation and E. saligna plantation, presenting 74% of overlap.
ABSTRACTThe tree growth and biomass accumulation, as well as the maintenance of forest residue at the soil surface can act in the removal of carbon from the atmosphere through the cycling process of plant material. The objective was to study the influence of Eucalyptus sp. Plantations with 20, 44 and 240 months of age on the variation of carbon in soil and biomass. The carbon in the soil depth was determined by CHNS auto-analyzer and carbon in the vegetation was determined by the biomass in each forest, considering a factor of 0.45 of the dry mass. We determined the density and particle size distribution of soil. For the comparison between plantations, there was analysis of variance and comparison of means of carbon in vegetation and soil, considering the 5 % level of probability. The carbon content and stock in the soil were low, indicating that a natural feature of the category of Paleuldt, or the growth of eucalyptus forests, replacing the field native vegetation did not aggregate a significant increase in the carbon. Although, there was a significant increase carbon in aboveground biomass. It includes forest biomass and litter. So, despite the values of carbon stocks are low, it identified a greater average total in the soil compared to the stock aboveground. Furthermore, this 1. AbstractGrowth and symptoms of nutritional deficiency in "espinheira-santa" seedlings with the omission of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium. The demand for medicinal plants is growing in Brazil and this condition requires information about mineral nutrition of plants. The objective of this study was to characterize the symptoms of deficiency and growth in "espinheira-santa" (Maytenus ilicifolia) seedlings, cultivated under nutrient omission in nutrient solution. An experiment was conducted in greenhouse conditions, using the missing element technique. The seedlings were cultivated during 105 days in complete nutrient solution, with the omission of N, P, K from complete solution and only water. The variables plant height and diameter were measured monthly, and calculated the growth rate. At the end of the experiment was evaluated shoots and roots dry matter, volume of roots and the characteristics symptoms of nutrient deficiency. The experimental design was a completely randomized block with five treatments and five replications. Based on data analyzed the conclusions were the following: the omission of K did not affect the growth in height, the shoot and total dry matter were affected in the treatment without N, under omission of N the plants showed chlorosis uniform and decrease growth; the omission of P demonstrated low leaf expansion and for K, tip and marginal scorch necrosis on old leaves Keywords: Maytenus ilicifolia; visual symptoms; plant nutrition. resumo a expansão de plantações de eucalipto no sul do brasil na última década, especialmente em áreas com campos naturais, potencialmente altera a dinâmica do carbono orgânico total (Cot) e nitrogênio total (nt) do solo. objetivou-se testar o modelo Century 4.5 na simulação das mudanças de estoques de COT e NT na camada superficial (0,0-0,2 m) do solo, em povoamentos de Eucalyptus sp. com diferentes idades em três municípios no rs. OPERATIONALITY OF SMARTPHONE APPLICATIONS FOR MEASURING TREE HEIGHT IN THE CERRADO-AMAZON ECOTONE REGION ABSTRACT: The objective verify the operability of smartphone applications comparing them with traditional hypsometer of proven efficiency in the measurement of total height of trees in forest fragment. The Vertex IV® Hypsometer was used as a real measure of total height, due to the impossibility of obtaining the variable directly. 90 trees were randomly selected, distributed equally in three height classes: 1 (9.0-15.9 m); 2 (16.0-22.9 m); and 3 (> 23.0 m). To estimate total height, the following applications (Apps) were used for smartphones with Android operating system: Two Point Height (T.P.H); Measure Height (M.H); Smart Measure (S.M) and Hypsometer (HR). All tested applications, as they result in average heights statistically equal to the average obtained with the Vertex®, can be indicated for the measurement of trees in the different height classes. The Bias (V), Mean of Absolute Differences (MD), Standard Deviation of Differences (DPD) and Mean Square Error (RMSE) statistics indicated, considering all applications, that the Hypsometer presented a less tendentious and more homogeneous distribution of residues, besides a smaller average error. Upgrading applications, accelerometer resolution, and tailored care were key determinants of application performance as a viable alternative for tree measurement in terms of cost and efficiency. Keywords: vertex, acelerometer, cost.
