Botulinum toxin acts at neuromuscular junctions close to muscle motor points and is used to help manage spastic upper-limb deformities. To develop a system allowing clinicians to identify optimal injection sites by an easily reproducible technique, forearm flexor muscles were dissected in 20 formalin-preserved human limbs. Motor points for flexor carpi ulnaris, flexor carpi radialis, flexor digitorum superficialis and pronator teres were (1) identified, (2) related to a reference grid based on lines (proximal, distal, lateral, medial and diagonals) drawn between forearm anatomical landmarks, and (3) defined in terms of their percentage distances along the established grid lines.
Derived indices on the Trail Making Test (TMT), a test often used to screen for cognitive impairments, were examined in a sample of substance abusers in drug abuse treatment programs. A mixed race sample was drawn from electronic files of data from the Drug Abuse Treatment Outcome Study (DATOS). The DATOS was a naturalistic, prospective cohort study that collected data from 1991 through 1993 within 96 programs in 11 cities in the United States. Data were analyzed to determine the effects of demographic variables on derived indices created by adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing parts A and B of the TMT in this large treatment sample of substance abusers. The variables of sex, age, ethnicity, and education were statistically significant for selected derived indices of the TMT.
Green tea (Camellia sinensis) is consumed daily between the meals or after meals in Japan and other Asian countries. In recent years, green tea and its major polyphenolics have been demonstrated to prevent chemically induced tumors in a variety of experimental animal models system. The exact mechanism(s) of its anticarcinogenic activity remains to be elucidated, but green tea polyphenolics have demonstrated antimutagenic, anticarcinogenic, antioxidant, and antipromotional effects, including inhibition of Phase I and inducing Phase II enzymes. Enzyme activities of glutathione peroxidase, catalase, and quinone reductase, and glutathione S-transferase are also induced. However, a paucity of green tea effects in humans prompted us to investigate antimutagenic effects of green tea against smoke-induced mutation in humans. Chemopreventive effects of green tea and coffee among cigarette smokers were examined in 52 clinically healthy male subjects between 20-51 years of age. Blood specimens were obtained from non-smokers (Group I), smokers (II), smokers consuming green tea (III), and smoker/coffee drinkers (IV). The mean years of cigarette smoking (Ͼ10 cigarettes/day) of Groups II, III, and IV ranged from 13.4-14.7 years. Daily intake of green tea and coffee was 3 cups/day/6 months (III and IV). The frequencies of sister-chromatid exchange (SCE) in mitogenstimulated peripheral lymphocytes from each experimental group were determined and statistically analyzed. SCE rates were significantly elevated in smokers (9.46 Ϯ 0.46) vs. non-smokers (7.03 Ϯ 0.33); however, the frequency of SCE in smokers who consumed green tea (7.94 Ϯ 0.31) was comparable to that of non-smokers, implying that green tea can block the cigarette-induced increase in SCE frequency. Coffee, by contrast, did not exhibit a significant inhibitory effect on smoking-induced SCE.
The frequency of dicentrics + ring (dic/cell) and total chromosome aberrations (dicentrics, rings and excess acentrics, etc.) per cell (TAb/cell) has been studied in 50 male and female volunteers after high or low dose rate (HDR, LDR) irradiation of peripheral blood lymphocytes. The mean male aberration frequencies per cell after HDR irradiation were 0.38 dic/cell and 0.61 TAb/cell; following LDR irradiation, the mean aberration frequencies were 0.28 dic/cell and 0.45 TAb/cell. Equivalent female values after HDR irradiation were 0.42 dic/cell and 0.71 TAb/cell; after LDR irradiation, the mean aberration frequencies were 0.30 dic/cell and 0.48 TAb/cell. Analysis of variance showed that there was a highly significant difference between males and females have a greater HDR, but not LDR, irradiation It is concluded from this study that females have a greater variability in their radioresponse, and that this variability is related to progesterone, which has a profound effect upon radiosensitivity, as measured by cytogenetic end points.
