The relevance of children's animated films in the process of teaching specific roles, values and ideals is widely recognized by culture scholars. The present work aims to unveil and critically analyze the subtle discursive strategy present in some of these media artifacts primarily addressed to children, which consists in reiterating the normality status of hegemonic forms of gender identification by attaching negativity content to devious identities in relation to socio-historic rules of-masculinity‖ and-femininity‖. Therefore, we make use of the Greimasian semiotics approach in order to analyze the presence of transgression elements of-natural‖ conceived gender roles in the representation of the villains Ursula, Jafar and Scar, from the Disney animation movies-The Little Mermaid‖ (1989),-Alladin‖ (1992) and-The Lion King‖ (1994), respectively. We emphasize the analysis of the elements present on the text discursive level, namely the character's costumes, their body language codes and physical conformations. Together with semiotics, we use some of the concepts from the research line generically known as-Discursive Analysis‖, aiming to discuss the dialogical relation established among the-corpus‖ of analysis and the political and social conflicting speeches, proper to the socio-historic contexts from which the movies emerged. Furthermore, we aim to propose discussions over the roles that this association between deviation of gender norms and the antagonists figure play on the support of heteronormativity and pre-concepts regarding certain social groups, problematizing the animation films as non-formal education teaching tools. We conclude that the representation patterns of the studied villains, on their gender performances, comply with the ideological function of implicitly and negatively evaluate ways of being and acting which frustrate traditional expectations of-masculinity and femininity‖, unequivocally associating them to evil, cruelty, selfishness and greed. Finally, we attempt to understand the devious gender identities from the studied villains under some Queer Theory elements.
Understanding media culture as one of the main fields where processes of (re)production of meanings attributed to various aspects of social life take place, from which are structured procedures of control and exclusion of bodies, ideas and behaviors, this study aims to unveil and critically analyze the subtle discursive strategy recurrently used in Disney Studios animated films, strategy that consists in reiterating the normality status of hegemonic forms of gender identification by attaching negativity content to deviant identities. Therefore, we undertake a socio-cultural analysis -freely mobilizing methodological aspects of semiotics and Critical Discourse Analysis -of the gender performances of Ursula, the villain of The Little Mermaid (1989). We observe that the representation pattern mobilized in the animation conveys an implicit evaluation of the ways of being and acting that frustrate the binary gender norms, unequivocally associating them with cruelty and greed.
The COVID-19 pandemic has brought increased attention to the existing gender asymmetries in academia, which have been extensively studied in the literature. Using the analytical lens of “gendered academic citizenship”, this paper takes a micropolitical perspective to examine how the pandemic has impacted the dynamics of academic work, specifically focusing on the often-overlooked aspect of everyday interactions in the work environment. Through qualitative and quantitative analysis of survey data collected from 1750 lecturers and researchers in Portuguese higher education and research institutions, the study uncovers that women, especially those who are younger, single, have specific caregiving responsibilities, and are in the early stages of their careers, were more vulnerable to experiencing “everyday” microaggressions such as silencing, exclusion, belittlement, being ignored, lack of validation, and invisibility compared to men during the pandemic. These findings suggest that, while the marginalization of women in academia is a longstanding issue, the virtual work model has created a platform for the expression of subtle forms of disempowerment and discrimination against women. These dynamics are perpetuated within the micropolitics of organizations, shaping subjective feelings of belonging and circulating differential levels of recognition within academic institutions.
Women’s, Gender, and Feminist Studies (WGFS) in Portugal emerged relatively late compared to other European countries, and a systematic quantitative analysis of Portuguese research in this field is lacking. This article addresses this gap by conducting a pioneering bibliometric analysis of WGFS publications by scholars based in Portugal between 1995 and 2021, utilizing data from the Web of Science. The analysis reveals several key findings, including a significant growth in WGFS productivity in the 2010s, a high level of internationalization of Portuguese production, and the increasing prominence of specific themes and theoretical perspectives, such as LGBTQIA+ studies and intersectionality. By examining the trajectory of Portuguese scholarship in WGFS since the 1990s, this study provides valuable insights and opens important avenues for future research.
