This review is focused on the utilization of insects as a new opportunity in food and feed products, including their commercialization both in traditional and new markets. It has been suggested that insects are considerably more sustainable when compared with other sources of animal protein, thus alleviating the pressure over the environment and the planet facing the necessity to feed the world population, constantly increasing. Many chefs have adhered to the trend of using insects in their culinary preparations, bringing insects to the plan of top gastronomy, highlighting their organoleptic qualities allied to a recognized high nutritional value. However, in some markets, insects or insect-based products are not readily accepted because of neophobia and disgust. Moreover, the insect markets, farming, and commercialization are experiencing a huge growth, in which the domain of animal feed is undoubtedly a very strong component. The future of insects as human food and animal feed seems promising in view of the recent trends and challenges.

In a previous study we have shown that public buses in Oporto, the second largest city in Portugal, were highly contaminated with MRSA. Here we describe the results of a similar study performed in another urban area of Portugal–Lisbon, the capital. Between May 2011 and May 2012, hand touched surfaces of 199 public buses in Lisbon were screened for MRSA contamination. Subsequently, the hands of 575 passengers who frequently use these bus lines were also screened. All hand carriers of MRSA were further screened for nasal carriage. The isolates were characterized by PFGE, staphylococcal cassette chromosome (SCC) mec typing, spa typing, MLST and were tested for the presence of mecA, Panton-Valentine leukocidin and arginine catabolic mobile element genes. MRSA contamination was shown in 72 buses (36.2%). The majority of the isolates belonged to three major clones: Clone A was identified as EMRSA-15 defined by pattern PFGE A, spa types t2357/t747/t025/t379/t910, ST22, and SCCmec IVh (n = 21; 29%). Clone B was the New York/Japan clone characterized by PFGE B-t002/t10682-ST5-II (n = 15; 21%). Clone C included isolates with characteristics of the international community-acquired USA300 or related clones, PFGE C-t008-ST8-IVa/IVc/IVg/IVnt/VI (n = 19; 26%). The first two clones are currently the two major lineages circulating in Portuguese hospitals. The hands of 15 individuals were contaminated with MRSA belonging to the nosocomial clones A or B. Eleven of these individuals were not nasal carriers of MRSA and all but one had travelled by public transportation, namely by bus, prior to sampling. In conclusion, public buses in two major cities in Portugal are often contaminated with MRSA representing clones dominant in hospitals in the particular geographic area. MRSA contamination of public transport and the transfer of the bacteria to the hands of passengers may represent a route through which hospital-acquired MRSA clones may spread to the community.

Extended-spectrum β-lactamase-containing Escherichia coli isolates were detected in 32 of 119 fecal samples (26.9%) from birds of prey at Serra da Estrela, and these isolates contained the following β-lactamases: CTX-M-1 (n = 13), CTX-M-1 plus TEM-1 (n = 14), CTX-M-1 plus TEM-20 (n = 1), SHV-5 (n = 1), SHV-5 plus TEM-1 (n = 2), and TEM-20 (n = 1).

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a leading cause of infection in the community (CA-MRSA), but in spite of its relevance, no data exist concerning its epidemiology in Portugal. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the prevalence, population structure, and origin of MRSA in the Portuguese community. A total of 527 isolates, both methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA) and MRSA, were collected from individuals with no healthcare-related risk factors attending 16 healthcare institutions in Portugal. Isolates were characterized for the presence of mecA, Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL), and arginine catabolic mobile element (ACME), and by staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec) typing, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), spa, and multilocus sequence typing (MLST). Susceptibility to a panel of 13 antibiotics was tested. Isolates relatedness was analyzed by goeBURST and BURP. We found a high frequency (21.6%) of MRSA in the community. However, only 11.4% of the isolates belonged to typical CA-MRSA epidemic clones (USA300, USA400, USA700, Southwest Pacific, European, and ST398). The remaining isolates, which constituted the great majority (88.6%), belonged to hospital-associated MRSA (HA-MRSA) epidemic clones, namely, to the EMRSA-15 clone (77.2%). PVL was rare and carried by 17 isolates only (five MRSA and 12 MSSA). In the whole collection, some MRSA and MSSA were highly related. The high frequency of MRSA in the community in Portugal seems to result mainly from dissemination from the hospital. They might also have emerged from an extant MSSA population, by SCCmec acquisition, or MRSA clonal introduction from abroad.

The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence and risk factors for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) nasal carriage among patients and healthcare workers in Angola (ANG), São Tomé and Príncipe (STP), Cape Verde (CV) and East Timor (ET), and to characterize the antimicrobial susceptibility, virulence content and population structure of all S. aureus. Despite the importance of MRSA as a major human pathogen, data from these former Portuguese colonies in Africa and Asia are scarce. A total of 2065 nasal swabs recovered between 2010-14 were included in the study. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing and molecular characterization of S. aureus showed: (i) a very high MRSA prevalence in ANG (61.6%), moderate in STP (25.5%), low in CV (5.6%) and null in ET; (ii) a high prevalence of Panton-Valentine leukocidin in STP (36.8%), ET (29.2%) and CV (28.3%) contrasting with ANG (7.9%); (iii) ST5-SCCmecIVa, ST8-IV/V and ST5-VI were the major MRSA clones in ANG (65.2%), STP (44.8%) and CV (50%), respectively; (iv) a high resistance to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole in ANG (66.5%) and STP (50.9%), to rifampin in ANG (77.3%), and to tetracycline in STP (26.3%) and ET (20.8%); (v) three major methicillin-susceptible S. aureus clones (ST15, ST508, ST152) were present in all four countries. Age <18 years (OR 2.03, 95% CI 1.24-3.31), previous surgery (OR 2.45, 95% CI 1.24-4.83), no smoking (OR 4.04, 95% CI 1.05-15.50), and longer hospitalization (OR 2.53, 95% CI 1.49-4.28) were risk factors for MRSA carriage. This study provided the first comprehensive overview on MRSA in former Portuguese colonies in Africa and Asia, missing data in the world map.

We describe a high prevalence of OS-MRSA among S. aureus strains recovered in two African countries. OS-MRSA in PALOP countries were mainly associated with ST88 and ST8, two prevalent MRSA clonal types in these countries. If direct testing for mecA is not available, cefoxitin susceptibility testing is highly recommended to avoid the misidentification of OS-MRSA.

Aims:  To analyse the occurrence of faecal carriage of vancomycin‐resistant enterococci (VRE) in Buteo buteo and to study the associated resistance and virulence genes. Methods and Results:  The presence of VRE was investigated in 33 faecal samples of B. buteo. Samples were seeded in Slanetz–Bartley agar plates supplemented with vancomycin for VRE recovery. Genes encoding antimicrobial resistance and virulence were studied by polymerase chain reaction. Vancomycin‐resistant Enterococcus faecium isolates were characterized by multilocus sequence typing. VRE with an acquired mechanism of resistance (vanA genotype) were detected in 9% of samples analysed (Ent. faecium and Enterococcus durans). In addition, 27% of samples contained VRE with an intrinsic mechanism of resistance (Enterococcus gallinarum, vanC1). All vanA‐containing isolates showed resistance to tetracycline and erythromycin and harboured the tet(M) and/or tet(L) genes, in addition to the ermB gene. The vat(E) and/or vat(D), cat(A) and aph(3′)‐IIIa genes were identified in quinupristin–dalfopristin‐, chloramphenicol‐, and kanamycin‐resistant vanA‐containing strains, respectively. The sequence types ST273 and ST5 were identified in two vanA‐positive Ent. faecium isolates, and the presence of hyl, gelE, cylA, cylL and cylM virulence genes and gelatinase activity were identified in Ent. faecium ST5 strain. Conclusions:  The intestinal tract of B. buteo could be a reservoir of vanA‐positive enterococci. Significance and Impact of the Study:  First study focused to define the occurrence of vanA‐containing Enterococcus strains in B. buteo.
