Purpose -The purpose of this paper is to discover which social networking sites international students prefer for information dissemination activities. As more libraries experiment with social networking to inform and connect with students, there is a need to determine the effectiveness of this strategy for reaching international students. The paper seeks to address three questions: what social networking sites do international students prefer and why? Which sites do they use to socialise and which do they use to gather and distribute information? How can libraries leverage this information to enhance the international student experience? Design/methodology/approach -Information on social networking preferences and usage was gathered from 13 per cent of students at Bond University via an online survey. Findings -The findings confirm that for some international student populations, social networking preferences differentiated between the domestic students' preferences. In addition to social activities, international and domestic students are using particular social networking sites for a wide range of educational purposes, including group work and sharing and gathering information. Although Facebook is still the predominant choice for the majority of students, the findings suggest particular sites such as Twitter and YouTube should be considered by libraries as a means to engage both international and domestic students. Institutions with large Chinese student populations should consider the use of Renren. Originality/value -As of yet there have been no studies that have investigated and compared international students' social networking preferences to domestic students. The study connects the findings to practical implications for academic library use of social networking sites.
The Western Australian Group of University Librarians (WAGUL) has a long history of successful collaborative ventures. A wellestablished cooperative interlending agreement is one notable venture that has operated successfully for over 20 years. To further enhance this service, WAGUL decided to participate in the national local interlending and document delivery administration system (LIDDAS) project with the objective of implementing an automated system, using the VDX software, to manage document delivery activity. Since 2002, VDX has been used for the transmission of requests and documents between the WAGUL member libraries. The success of this project has largely been the result of the four libraries working together to share expertise and problem-solving. This article discusses the process of working collaboratively across institutions -and its benefits and difficulties -in the context of implementing an automated document delivery system.
Social media is reshaping healthcare and the way healthcare professionals and patients interact. In Scotland, few allied health professionals (AHPs) use these media to connect with policy makers, service users, the public, or colleagues. We aimed to establish whether social media, could be used to raise the profile of AHPs—three members of the AHP Directors Scotland Group (ADSG) and one AHP national lead. Training in the use of social media tools was supplemented by support by a subject matter expert throughout the 12-week project. Each AHP used social media in support of their own area of expertise. Over 1348 tweets and 8 blogs were posted, 753 followers attracted. Various audiences were reached; including UK and international AHPs; other healthcare professionals, professional bodies, the public, third sector and patient representative organisations. Working within an ethical framework, AHPs can use social media to promote greater awareness of their role and impact. It can also be used to forge new relationships and connect with individuals and organisations not routinely experienced.
Purpose: To investigate the efficacy and safety of UC-MSC(umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells, UC-MSC) transplantation for osteoarthritis. Methods: Three patients with knee osteoarthritis, admitted by our hospital from May 2016 to July 2016, were received UC-MSC transplantation once with total cellular number of UC-MSC was 5~7Â10 7 by intra-articular injection. These patients were followed up regularly for 3 months after transplantation. The clinical situation and recovery of knee joint function were observed. Results: After transplantation the joint pain relieve significantly,the recovery of the ability of daily activities of the three patients improved obviously. No significant difference was observed when compared posttreatment with pre-treatment of biochemical parameters, which contains blood routine, hepatic function, renal function. Conclusions: The intra-articular injection of UC-MSC transplantation could ameliorate clinical manifestations and delay progression of osteoarthritis. It may be safe and effective in the treatment of osteoarthritis , but further observation was still required to evaluate its long term efficacy.
