ECONOMIC VIABILITY AND ROTATION OF FORESTRY PLANTATIONS OF CANDEIA (Eremanthus erythropappus), UNDER CONDITIONS OF RISK ABSTRACT: The general objective of this paper was studying the economic feasibility and determining the economic rotation of candeia planting at various spacings under risky conditions. The study was conducted from an experimental planting of candeia consisting of four spacings (1.5 x 1.5 m, 1.5 x 2.0 m, 1.5 x 2.5 m and 1.5 x 3.0 m) for which the cash flows related to the different cutting ages were obtained. For the risk analysis the Monte Carlo method was used, its having the Equivalent Annual Value (EAV) as the output variable (output) and as input variables (sources of uncertainty) the probability distributions concerning
Cultivation of nonnative candeia is an alternative way of obtaining raw material to meet the market demands for essential oils and fence posts. A successful stand is conditional on careful planning intended to optimize activities and make the project economically feasible. The objective of this study was to analyze the economic feasibility and to determine the economic rotation age for stands of candeia (Eremanthus erythropappus) using different interrow spacing arrangements, as well as to analyze the sensitivity of both economic indicators for candeia and economic rotation to variations in cash flow variables. Equivalent Annual Value (VAE) was the method used for the economic analyses. A simulation was carried out to detect VAE sensitivity to changes in variables related to cash flow. It was concluded that candeia cultivation can be profitable when spacing arrangements are 1.5 x 2.0 m or more. Arrangements denser than that are economically unfeasible for the ages being analyzed. Among the analyzed spacing arrangements, 1.5 x 3.0 m was found to be the most profitable and less risky. The economic rotation age for candeia is 15 years using 1.5 x 1.5 m spacing; 13 years using 1.5 x 2.0m and 1.5 x 2.5 m spacing; and 12 years using 1.5 x 3.0 m spacing. Proportional variations in timber price, volume output and interest rate implied inversely proportional variations in economic rotation for the spacing arrangements being studied. Conversely, proportional variations in seedling price implied directly proportional variations in rotation. Changes in land price did not affect economic rotation for any of the spacing arrangements.Key words: Economic analysis, economic rotation, spacing, sensitivity analysis.
Wood demand is increasing in quality and quantity, and economic studies are fundamental to analyze the feasibility of forest projects. These researches are in line with management and silvicultural studies, highlighting growth and yield modeling. This paper proposes an economic evaluation of implementation of African mahogany stands in Brazil under different perspectives of forest management. Data are from plantations ranging from 1.1 to 15 years old in different Brazilian regions. Financial analysis was undertaken using Net Present Value (NPV), Internal Rate of Return (IRR) and Equal Annual Equivalent (EAE) for a 20-year period considering three thinning management regimes (A -unthinned, B -one thinning at age 10 years remaining 150 trees ha -1 and C -two thinnings, first at age 8 remaining 150 trees ha -1 and second at age 15 years remaining 75 trees ha . A Monte Carlo simulation was performed considering six risk variables. Results showed that the discount rate is the variable that most influences the viability of the project. All site indexes in all management regimes lead to a feasible financial return, with NPV values ranging from 25,053 to 125,780 Brazilian reais per hectare, being regimes B and C the best ones. The probability for an unfeasible investment is almost zero, highlighting African mahogany as a great forest investment opportunity, providing high interest rates values (14% to 25%), superior to most available market rates of return.Index terms: Forest investment; Monte Carlo simulation; financial risk.
MORPHO-ANATOMICAL, BIOCHEMICAL AND PHYSIOLOGICAL STUDIES IN SEEDS OF Eremanthus erythropappus (DC.) MacLeish DURING GERMINATIONABSTRACT -The objective of this study was to perform morpho-anatomical, biochemical and physiological studies on seeds of Eremanthus erythropappus (DC.) MacLeish during germination. The results showed that the best condition to germinate the seeds was a 14h photoperiod associated with alternating temperature 20-30ºC. Under this condition the seeds started germination at 48h of imbibition and reached the maximum germination (96%) on the eighth day of imbibition. The imbibition curve showed a three-phase pattern where the first phase had a fast increase in the fresh weight of 95%. The seeds have a light brown-colored tegument and saliencies. The endosperm is extremely reduced presenting two to three cell layers surrounding the embryo. The embryo makes up most of the seed. The first morphological modifications in the tegument occurred on the first day of imbibition. The beginning of ruptures in the tegument and visible primary root growth coincided with the increase in the fresh weight of the seeds, the start of phase III of imbibition and advance in the
