AimsThis study aimed to analyze the scientific literature about social networks and social support in eating disorders (ED).MethodsBy combining keywords, an integrative review was performed. It included publications from 2006–2013, retrieved from the MEDLINE, LILACS, PsycINFO, and CINAHL databases. The selection of articles was based on preestablished inclusion and exclusion criteria.ResultsA total of 24 articles were selected for data extraction. There was a predominance of studies that used nonexperimental and descriptive designs, and which were published in international journals. This review provided evidence of the fact that fully consolidated literature regarding social support and social networks in patients with ED is not available, given the small number of studies dedicated to the subject. We identified evidence that the family social network of patients with ED has been widely explored by the literature, although there is a lack of studies about other networks and sources of social support outside the family.ConclusionThe evidence presented in this study shows the need to include other social networks in health care. This expansion beyond family networks would include significant others – such as friends, colleagues, neighbors, people from religious groups, among others – who could help the individual coping with the disorder. The study also highlights the need for future research on this topic, as well as a need for greater investment in publications on the various dimensions of social support and social networks.
It was noted that the perspective of the patient regarding their readmissions, as well as the interface with the social and familial context in which they maintain their social relationships and care for their health, was largely unexplored by the literature.
Palavras-chave: transtornos alimentares, relações afetivas, família, redes sociais, interação interpessoal Affective and Family Relationships of Women with Anorexia and BulimiaABSTRACT -This study aimed to investigate the social support network of women with eating disorders, emphasizing their affective family relations. The results indicated that participant´s social networks are restricted, with prominence of family members in their composition. Family relations, however oscillate between affective turbulence and detachment. The affective relationships held with parents, husbands and boyfriends are marked by disagreements and dissatisfactions. The low density of the network of friends and the impoverishment of social life result in isolation and difficulties in initiating and/or maintaining lasting affective relationships.
AbstractThis is an integrative review of the literature that aims to investigate the constructs of body image and eating habits in anorexia nervosa (AN). The examined databases were MedLine, LILACS and PsycINFO in the period between 2005 and 2009. Most of the studies were non-experimental and descriptive, from international sources. The results showed that the personality of women with AN is permeated by low selfesteem, feelings of inferiority and inadequacy, insecurity, perfectionism and obsessiveness. These are factors that cause high inhibition and social withdrawal, and that influence body image distortion and the acquisition of dysfunctional eating habits. In conclusion, it is highlighted the need of an interdisciplinary treatment and the development of new national experimental studies seeking to understand the relationship between the constructs.
