Ethical scandals in business have led to calls for more ethical or moral leadership. Yet, we still know very little about what characterizes ethical leadership and what its positive consequences actually are. We argue that the major question is not about what leaders value, but rather whether their ethical values are regularly reflected in behavioral patterns across situations and situational challenges. To address this, we have begun to build the Ethical Leadership Behavior Scale, which is based on behaviors reflecting concrete manifestations of ethical values (e.g., fairness, respect) across occasions and situational barriers. A study with 592 employees of 110 work units in two departments provided a first test of this scale and demonstrated that the level of ethical leadership behavior predicts important work-related attitudes (job satisfaction, work engagement, affective organizational commitment) and outcomes (health complaints, emotional exhaustion, absenteeism).

Gerade weil sozialpsychologische Themen in unserem Alltag allgegenwärtig sind, ließ und lässt sich Sozialpsychologie gut auf eine ganze Reihe von Themen anwenden. Zum Beispiel müssen Teams in Notfallambulanzen lebenswichtige Entscheidungen unter großem Zeitdruck treffen, und die sozialpsychologische Forschung macht konkrete Vorschläge, wie Ärzte und Pflegepersonal zusammenarbeiten sollten, um Fehlentscheidungen zu verhindern (z.B. Tschan et al., 2006). Aggression (7 Kap. 8) spielt eine zentrale Rolle, wenn sich Hooligans zusammentun, um gegnerische Gruppen anzugreifen oder mutwillig fremdes Eigentum zu zerstören; und Ähnliches gilt bei tätlichen Übergriffen von Neonazis auf Ausländer. Sozialpsychologie hilft uns auch, zu verstehen, wie Vorurteile Verhalten beeinflussen, was aggressives Verhalten auslöst und wie Feindseligkeiten zwischen Gruppen reduziert werden können (7 Abschn. 14.4). Es liegt also nahe, sozialpsychologisches Wissen auf zentrale soziale Themen und Problemfelder unserer Gesellschaft anzuwenden. Tatsächlich finden sich in allen vorhergehenden Kapiteln dieses Buches Beispiele für erfolgreichen Einsatz dieses Wissens. 15.2.2 Angewandte Sozialpsychologie und ihre Beziehung zur Grundlagenforschung Wie profitieren Grundlagenforschung und angewandte Forschung voneinander? Angewandte Sozialpsychologie ist der Teil innerhalb der Sozialpsychologie, der das Wissen, das die Grundlagenforschung hervorgebracht hat, auf praktische Themen überträgt. Zum Teil hilft uns die Sozialpsychologie, soziale Probleme zu lösen oder zumindest zu verringern. Das wird möglich, indem angewandte Forschung die Ursachen sozialer Probleme hinterfragt und entsprechende Interventionen entwirft, umsetzt und anschließend evaluiert. Nehmen wir als Beispiel ein ernst zu nehmendes Problem vieler Länder, den Alkoholkonsum unter Studierenden. Vor allem so genannte »Rauschtrinker« (»binge drinkers«), die mehr als vier alkoholische Getränke nacheinander konsumieren, haben häufig alkoholbezogene Probleme, z.B. verpassen sie Lehrveranstaltungen, haben ungeschützten Sex oder verletzen sich im Rausch (Wechsler et al., 2002). Nachdem traditionelle Interventionsversuche mittels Aufklärungskampagnen scheiterten, zogen Praktiker sozialpsychologische Befunde darüber heran, wie Normen das Verhalten beeinflussen. Bitte erinnern Sie sich, dass Normen Regeln sind, die die für eine soziale Gruppe angemessenen Einstellungen und Verhaltensweisen vorschreiben (7 Abschn. 11.2.2 und 7 Abschn. 12.4.3). Die Forschung zeigt, dass Mitglieder einer Gruppe dazu tendieren, sich diesen Gruppennormen zu unterwerfen, da solche Normen über die Zeit Teil ihres individuellen Wertesystems geworden sind (Turner, 1991).
