This study describes the tree vegetation and soils occurring in a seasonally dry tropical forest (SDTF) and mesotrophic cerradão transition in southwestern Brazil. All trees ≥ 5 cm diameter were measured in 20 plots of 20 × 25 m, 10 in SDTF, and 10 in mesotrophic cerradão. Ten soil samples of 0−20 cm depth were made per plot and mixed in plot groups to produce two composite samples. A total of 71 species was recorded. Anadenanthera colubrina had the highest importance values in both formations. Differences in soil fertility were found between SDTFs (eutrophic soils) and mesotrophic cerradão (mesotrophic soils). A non-metric multidimensional scaling and cluster analysis confirmed the soil fertility segregation, and also showed an agreement between soil fertility and variance in species composition gradients. The mesotrophic cerradão showed higher species richness since it also includes many species typical of more dystrophic and open forms of Cerrado.
rEsuMo: Trichilia elegans A. Juss.
ABSTRACT COMPOSITION AND DISTRIBUTION OF TREE SPECIES IN AN ALTITUDINAL GRADIENT, URUCUM MOUNTAINS, BRAZIL. Altitudinal variation can promote changes in floristic composition and physiognomy of the vegetation. This research aims to describe the floristic composition and structure of tree communities along an altitudinal gradient in the Urucum mountains, Corumbá, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. Ten contiguous plots of 10m x 20m were established in each altitudinal levels (100, 200, 300, 500 and 700m), performing 1ha at all. We surveyed all trees, including palms, with diameter at breast height ≥ 5cm. We found 1295 trees belonging to 32 families and 74 species. Fabaceae and Meliaceae were the most common families at lower altitude, and Fabaceae and Myrtaceae at higher altitude. Floristic composition changed from the base to the top of the study area, i.e. from submontane semideciduous forest (100 to 500m) to woodland savanna (700m). Also, the community structure changed at the same direction, with the species of greater importance value index (IVI) changing in each level. Altitude average height decreased, and basal area and dominance of specimens increased in higher altitudes. These changings may be related to soil physical properties, since at 700m soil is shallow, presenting only an A horizon.
The galls are structures formed of plant tissues in response to the activity of different types of organisms, especially by insects. As a consequence of an intimate relationship with their host plants, most of these insects have a very narrow host range. In this study we report the occurrence of galls on Microgramma mortoniana. Morphological characteristics and field observations are presented. The study was carried out in a seasonal semi-deciduous forest fragment, located in the São João do Oeste municipality, Santa Catarina, southern Brazil. The galls present a fusiform shape and similar indument to the rhizome, in a higher density. In the region of occurrence of the galls, a widening of the rhizome was observed, reaching an average of 9 mm (±1mm), whereas in a rhizome with normal growth the width is 4 (±1 mm). The gall is unicameral, with the following dimensions: 7 mm (±1 mm) x 2 (±1 mm). The larvae observed into the chamber are about 0,7 mm long, being representative of the family Tortricidae (Lepidoptera). In all cases, the rhizomes with galls do not presented continuous development and, consequently, the rhizome has its limit of growth defined by the occurrence of the gall. The results indicate that a greater sampling effort of fern galls in the Neotropics is needed, contributing to the knowledge about the distribution of the galls on ferns lineages.
ResumoCyathea atrovirens (Langsd. & Fisch.) Unitermos: frondes, queimada, samambaia arborescente AbstractFire resistance in a population of Cyathea atrovirens (Langsd. & Fisch.) Domin (Cyatheaceae) in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Cyathea atrovirens (Langsd. & Fisch.) Domin is a tree fern that occurs in the state of Rio Grande do Sul from sea level to an altitude of 300m. We monitored a population of 10 individuals of C. atrovirens affected by burning in the municipality of Campo Bom, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The objective of this study was to analyze the responses of a Cyathea atrovirens population after the occurrence of a fi re, considering the following aspects: frond production, annual rates of relative growth of caudex length, and the production, maturation and release of spores. The sporophytes of larger size produced more fronds than the smaller ones. We observed a signifi cant relationship between caudex length and relative growth (T CR ) in individuals of smaller size. In the fi rst year, after the fi re, all individuals produced new fronds. The spore production was asynchronic. The species apparently demonstrated its capacity to support the occurrence of quick fi res, since the post-fi re frond production was gradually reestablished.
