-(Influence of soils and topography on the variations of species composition and structure of the community of trees and shrubs of a tropical semideciduous forest in Ingaí, southeastern Brazil). A survey of the community of trees and shrubs, topography and soils of a fragment of tropical semidecidous forest was carried out with the objective of assessing alleged correlations between the variations in physiognomic structure and species composition and variations in soil water regime and chemical fertility. The forest fragment, with an area of 17 ha is situated on the margin of the river Ingaí (21°24' S and 44°55' W), Ingaí municipality, Minas Gerais state, south-eastern Brazil. A topographic survey and a detailed soil classification were accomplished in the forest area. Individual trees and shrubs with diameter at breast height (dbh) ≥ 5 cm were sampled in 25 plots with 20 × 20 m of dimensions. Samples of surface soil (0-20 cm of depth) were collected from each plot for analyses of chemical and textural properties. The survey registered 2,683 individuals belonging to 140 species, 90 genera, and 41 families, as well as four soil subgroups and six drainage classes. A canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) of the patterns emerging from the environmental variables and species' abundances indicated that these are distributed in the fragment under a strong influence of the water regime and chemical fertility of the soils. Besides, many species produced significant correlations among their abundance in the plots, soil drainage classes and saturation of bases, suggesting that water and mineral nutrients are key environmental variables determining species distribution in the forest.RESUMO -(Influência do solo e topografia sobre as variações da composição florística e estrutura da comunidade arbóreo-arbustiva de uma floresta estacional semidecidual em Ingaí, MG).
Aim The aim of this study was to test the role of environmental factors and spatially autocorrelated processes, such as historical fragmentation and dispersal limitation, in driving floristic variation across seasonally dry tropical forests (SDTFs) in eastern South America.Location SDTFs extending from the Caatinga phytogeographical domain of north-eastern Brazil to the Chaco phytogeographical domain of northern Argentina, an area referred to as the Dry Diagonal. Methods We compiled a database of 282 inventories of woody vegetation in SDTFs from across the Dry Diagonal and combined this with data for 14 environmental variables. We assessed the relative contribution of spatially autocorrelated processes and environmental factors to the floristic turnover among SDTFs across the Dry Diagonal using variation partitioning methods. In addition, we used multivariate analyses to determine which environmental factors were most important in explaining the turnover. Results We found that the environmental factors measured (temperature, precipitation and edaphic conditions) explained 21.3% of the variation in species composition, with 14.1% of this occurring independently of spatial autocorrelation. A spatially structured fraction of 4.2% could not be accounted for by the environmental factors measured. The main axis of compositional variation was significantly correlated with a north-south gradient in temperature regime. At the extreme south of the Dry Diagonal, a cold temperature regime, in which frost occurred, appeared to underlie floristic similarities between chaco woodlands and southern SDTFs.Main conclusions Environmental variables, particularly those related to temperature regime, seem to be the most significant factors affecting variation in species composition of SDTFs. Thus historical fragmentation and isolation alone cannot explain the turnover in species composition within SDTFs, as is often assumed. Compositional and environmental heterogeneity needs to be taken into account both to understand the past distribution of SDTFs and to manage and conserve this key tropical biome.
Palavras-chave: análise multivariada, conservação, Floresta Atlântica ombrófila de baixada, flora regional ABSTRACT -(Composition, richness and heterogeneity of the tree flora in the São João river basin, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil). Floristic studies have indicated the São João river basin, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, SE Brazil, as containing particularly high tree species richness and diversity. Nevertheless, such statements are based on local studies only since an analysis of the tree flora at a regional level has yet to be produced. This study compiles floristic and phytosociological surveys of 20 patches of low altitude rain forest (30-300 m of elevation) in the São João river basin to produce an analysis of the composition, diversity and heterogeneity of the tree flora. The compilation included only trees with dbh ≥ 2.5 cm that were identified to the species level. The tree-flora sample totaled 460 species, 231 genera and 62 families. These figures confirm that the region actually shelters a tree flora with high species diversity, including many considered rare or vulnerable to extinction, and may be considered one of the richest among the Atlantic Forests of SE Brazil. Multivariate analysis detected high floristic heterogeneity among forest remnants, which contributes to this high regional richness. Patterns of floristic similarity suggest that the main source of this heterogeneity is the difference in conservation status of each patch.
