The purpose of the present study was to explore the relation of work-related risk factors and well-being among healthcare workers and the impact on patient safety, using the Health and Work Survey (INSAT) and Mental Health Continuum - Short Form (MHC-SF). A sample of 361 Portuguese healthcare workers participated in this study. The results indicate some significant work-related risk factors: for emotional well-being, Impossible to express myself (β = -0.977), Not having recognition by superiors (β = -1.028) and Have to simulate good mood and/or empathy (β = -1.007); for social well-being, Exposed to the risk of sexual discrimination (β = -2.088), Career progress is almost impossible (β = -1.518), and Have to hide my emotions (β = -2.307); finally for psychological well-being Exposed to the risk of sexual discrimination (β = -2.153), Career progress is almost impossible (β = -1.377), and Have to simulate good mood and/or empathy (β = -3.201). The results showed high levels of well-being despite the exposure of several risk factors at workplace. Regarding the work-related risk factors, the study showed that most of the participants are exposed to several risk factors at workplace (ranging from environmental risk factors, biological to physical), although psychosocial risk factors (work relations with superiors and colleagues, employment relations, and emotional demands) are the ones that most impact on well-being.

The purpose of this study was to develop the Health and Work Survey (INSAT) and examine the validity of the discomfort rating scale. Data were collected from 706 Portuguese workers from six economic sectors with the support of the Health and Work Survey (INSAT - Inquérito Saúde e Trabalho). The INSAT is a self-administered questionnaire to assessing working conditions, health and wellbeing, and to provide information to the occupational health systems in the organisations. For the survey instrument validation, the Rasch Partial Credit Model (PCM) was used to analyse item fit statistics. From the application of PCM, Person Separation Reliability was obtained (0.8761) and the value can be considered very good (>0.8). From the statistical analysis, the Overall Model fit information, given by Outfit Mean square/Infit Mean square, is between 0.5 and 1.5, meaning "Productive for measurement" and "acceptable fit overall". The INSAT items can generate predictable response patterns. We recommend that the INSAT discomfort rating scale and some other items should be reviewed in future works. In any event, this tool proves to be useful in assessing the relationship between work and health and in evaluating key main risk factors, helping to prevent problems and improving occupational health systems.

Due to the demanding changes caused in the population by the COVID-19 pandemic, including a persisting experience of fear and social isolation, multiple studies have focused on the protective role of several psychological characteristics on mental health. Emotional intelligence and social support are commonly linked to mental health and well-being. The present study aims to analyze the mediator role of emotional intelligence and social support on university students’ mental health, taking into consideration the role of gender differences. An online questionnaire was administered to a sample of 923 university students during the COVID-19 lockdown in Portugal. Significant gender differences were found on mental health symptoms, emotional intelligence, and social support. A double mediation model was computed to verify if gender influences on mental health were mediated by emotional intelligence and social support. The results show indirect effects of gender on mental health. However, as both mediators mediate in the opposite direction, the total indirect effects become null. Thus, a strong direct effect of gender on mental health remains. The results of the present study have theoretical implications on protective factors of mental health by gender and practical implications for psychological intervention in university counselling services.

Background Working in healthcare can entail intense emotional demands that increases susceptibility to occupational risk factors. Psychosocial risk assessment can contribute to promoting awareness of the effects of work on positive mental health. AimsTo explore and analyse the influence of psychosocial work factors on positive mental health among psychologists. MethodsA cross-sectional study of 339 psychologists was conducted. Two instruments were used for data collection: the Mental Health Continuum-Short Form (MHC-SF) to assess well-being and the Health and Work Survey (INSAT) to assess psychosocial work factors. Results This study identified psychosocial work factors that affect psychologists' positive mental health, namely, emotional well-being was affected by 'Need help from colleagues' (β = −1.091), 'Have no one I can trust' (β = −1.253) and 'Complex work' (β = 0.751); psychological well-being was affected by 'Intense work pace' (β = 1.151), 'Not able to participate in decisions' (β = −3.695) and 'Complex work' (β = 1.520); and social well-being was affected by 'Always changing roles and tasks' (β = −1.810) and 'Not able to participate in decisions' (β = −2.470). Conclusions Psychosocial work factors such as work organization, work relationships and emotional demands influence psychologists' positive mental health. Social support at the workplace and having challenging and autonomous work can promote mental health. It is important to develop better organizational practices to promote mental health and well-being among these professionals.

Working conditions have a great influence in the idea of inability to perform the same type of work at 60. This notion does not only apply to older workers. In fact, even younger workers under certain working conditions hold the same view, thus raising social concerns that should be taken into account by public policies.

Introdução: O serviço de pré-natal é o acompanhamento realizado durante toda a gestação e o puerpério, que garante ao feto um desenvolvimento saudável e à mulher uma gravidez tranquila, bem como identificar precocemente problemas no curso da gestação. Este deve orientar e esclarecer sobre o parto e cuidados com o recém-nascido. O objetivo do estudo é identificar os fatores que determinam a participação ou não dos familiares nas consultas prénatais e investigar a opinião das gestantes sobre a participação deles durante essas consultas. Metodologia: Estudo descritivo, de abordagem qualitativa, com dados coletados através de entrevistas semiestruturadas com 20 (vinte) mulheres gestantes, maiores de 18 (dezoito) anos, que compareceram à unidade no período em que a pesquisa foi realizada. Resultados: Após a análise constatou-se que das vintes gestantes entrevistadas, dez informaram participarem das consultas pré-natais sozinhas, em que o principal motivo é o trabalho dos familiares, porém alegaram que muitos se preocupam com a evolução da gravidez e enfatizaram a importância da família nas consultas do pré-natal. Entre as que possuem a participação, declararam a preocupação com o andamento da gravidez, contudo essa participação não se dá em todas as consultas. Conclusão: Percebeu-se que as gestantes ainda realizam o pré-natal sozinhas e com isso sugere-se a necessidade de uma assistência pré-natal mais humanizada, enfatizando a importância da participação da família nas consultas de pré-natal, estimulando o seu parceiro e demais familiares a participarem deste ciclo gestatório, garantindo assim um parto mais seguro e um nascimento mais saudável.
