Durch Reduktion und durch reduzierende Methylierung von Naphthalin und methylierten Naphthalinen mit Natrium und Methylbromid in flussigem Ammoniakl) ist eine groBe Anzahl von methylierten Naphthalinen und Hydronaphthalinen erhalten worden. Diese sind durch ihre IR-Spektren charakterisiert worden. Dabei haben sich GesetzmiiRigkeiten in der Lage der Absorptionsbanden ergeben, die in Beziehung ZU bereits bekannten RegelmaiRigkeiten in den Spektren aromatischer Kohlenwasserstoffe gesetzt werden.
Die Racemisicrung des bei Solvolysen gebildeten A3-Menthens ist die Folge anionischer Hydrid-Wanderung. Eine darauf beruhende zweite anomale Reaktion ist bei der Alkoholyse die Bildung tertiaren Athers, eine dritte die Entstehung von A4(8)-Menthen. Alle zusammen machen bei der Methanolyse des Tosylats vorn Neomenthol, das nur A3-neben etwas A4(B)-Menthen liefert, 38 % (22 + 13 + 3 7 3 , beim Menthol und beim Isomenthol, hier bezogen auf den Anteil der Beteiligung von C-4 an der Reaktion, je 23% (18 + 3 + 2) bzw.(18 + 4 + 1 x) aus. Die beim Neomenthol in einer innermolekularen sN2-Substitution bestehende Hydrid-Verschiebung bedingt zusammen mit einer die Ionisierung nur unterstiitzenden Wirkung des tertiaren trans-Wasserstoffs, welche keine Racemisierung zur Folge hat, die hohe Solvolysegeschwindigkeit. Diese wird aunerdem durch den raumerfiillenden Isopropyl-Rest verstarkt, der bei innerrnolekularer Bewegung den Tosyl-Rest verdrangt. -Bei der langsamen Solvolyse von Menthyl-und Isomenthyltosylat wandert, nach erfolgter Ionisierung, cis-standiger tertiarer Wasserstoff anionisch. Aunerdem findet normale Abspaltung zum optisch aktiven A3-und Az-Menthen statt. Isomenthyltosylat lafit, entgegen friiheren Angaben, cis-42-und A3-Menthen in gleichen Mengen entstehen. -Das normale Substitutionsprodukt (sek. Ather bzw. Ester), das beim Neomenthyltosylat ganz fehlt, wird beim Menthyltosylat rnit abnehmender Nucleophilitat des Solvens unter zunehniender Erhaltung der Konfiguration gebildet. Die Moglichkeit einer teilweisen Spaltung an der O-S-Bindung erscheint diskutabel. NEOMENTHOL ReaktionenDie Solvolyse des Tosylats vom Neomenthol ist friiher 1) eingehend nur kinetisch untersucht worden.
1-Methyl-naphthalin wird entgegen friiheren Angaben durch Natrium in flilssigem Ammoniak i m nicht substituierten Kern angegriffen. Bei der Hydrolyse der metallorganischen Verbindung wird 1-MethyLA6-dihydronaphthalin erhalten; die durch Isomerisierung erhaltenen Kohlenwassentoffe mit der Doppelbindung in AS und A7 werden durch ihre IR-Spektren und durch BenzopersBuretitration als verschieden von dem A'-Kohlenwasserstoff erkannt. Die Methylierung mit Methylbromid lPBt zwei Methylreste ebenfalls in den unsubstituierten Kern in 1.4-Stellung eintreten, wie durch uberfilhrung des 1.4.5-Trimethyl-A2-dihydronaphthalins in 1.4.5-Trimethyl-naphthalin erkannt wird, das frtiher als 1.2.4-Trimethyl-naphthalin angesprochen worden war. Die Reduktion von 1-Methyl-naphthalin zu einem Dihydrokohlenwasserstoff kt zuerst von V. VBS~LL und J. K A P P~ mit Natrium und Alkohol nach der Methode von BAMBERGERJ) durchgefdhrt worden. Dabei sollte das 1 -Methyl-A%lihydronaphthalin (III) entstanden sein, ohne daD dafur nach den Angaben dieser Forscher selbst ein schlussiger Beweis erbracht worden wq. Sie nahmen einen AngriE auf den nicht methylierten Kern deswegen an, weil dieser bei der katalytischen Hydrierung von 2-Methyl-naphthalin mit einem Nickelkatalysator unter Bildung von 6-Methyl-l.2.3.4tetrahydro-naphthalin angegrSen wird4).Der gleiche Kohlenwasserstoff wie bei der Reduktion mit Natrium und Alkohol entsteht auch mit Natrium in fliissigem Ammoniak, wie W. HOCKEL und E. VEVERA~) mittels Charakterisierung durch Derivate nachweisen konnten. Die Doppelbindung kann aber nicht koqjugiert zum aromatischen Kern wie in einem A5-Kohlenwasserstoff liegen, wie sich aus den physikalischen Eigenschaften und der Bildung einer Additiomverbindung mit Quecksilberacetat ergibt. Durch Erhitzm mit Natriumalkoholat6) konnte die Doppelbindung in die konjugierte Lage vqschoben werden.Eine Strukturaufklthmg durch oxydativen Abbau, der schon beim AzDihydronaphthalin Schwierigkeiten bereitet, fuhrte bei keinem der beiden Kohlenwasserstoffe 1) XIII.
1.4.5-Trimethyl-naphthalinwird durch Natrium in fliissigem Ammoniak zu einem Geqisch von 1.4.5-Trimethyl-A6-und -AMihydronaphthalin reduziert. Die reduzierende Methylierung, d. h. die Umsetzung seiner Natriumverbindung mit Methylbromid, lZi5t nur ein Methyl unter Bildung von 1.4.5.8-Tetramethyl-A2-dihydronaphthalin in das Molekiil eintreten. 1.4.5.8-Tetramethyl-naphthalin wird auf die gleiche Weise nur zu einem Gemisch ungef5hr gleicher Teile von A1-und A.2-Dihydroisomerem und ebensoviel von einem leicht veranderlichen Kohlenwasserstoff, vielleicht 1.4.5.8-Tetramethyl-isotetralin, reduziert; Methyl tritt nicht in das Molekiil ein. Die Bildung von 1.4.5-TrimethyId2-dihydronaphthalin aus 1-Methyl-naphthalin durch reduzierende Methylierung mit Natrium und Methylbromid in fliissigem Ammoniakl) zeigt, daB hierbei die a-Stellungen irn nicht alkylierten Kern angegrzen werden. 1.4.5-Trimethyl-naphthalin besitzt nur mehr eine solche; es erhob sich somit die Frage, ob bei weiterer Alkylierung nur diese besetzt wird oder ob ein weiterer Methylrest entweder in P-Stellung eintritt oder eine a.a-gem. Dimethylgruppe schafft. Es hat sich nunmehr gezeigt, daB iiber die a-Akylierung hinaus nach dem Verfahren der reduzierenden Methylierung kein weiteres Methyl eingefiihrt werden kann. Es entsteht zu etwa 85 % das 1.4.5.8-Tetramethyl-A*-dihydronaphthalin (I) rnit isolierter Doppelbindung, das durch sein Dibromid vom Schmp. 164.5 -165O und die RG-Konstante der Benzopersaureoxydation, k-9.7 = 1.88 -10-4 [I/Mol.sec], charakterisiert wurde. Es LiRt sich zum 1.4.5.8-Tetramethyl-naphthalin dehydrieren; seine Doppelbindung kann mit Alkoholat nicht in die konjugierte Al-Stellung verschoben werden. I I1 111 1.4.5.8-Tetramethyl-A1-und -A2-dihydronaphthalin entstehen nebeneinander in vergleichbaren Mengen beim Versuch, 1.4.5.8-Tetramethyl-nphthalin reduzierend zu methylieren, wobei kein Methyl eintritt, sondern nur Reduktion stattfindet.
Solvolysen von Bornyltosylat werden besonders auf die dabei entstehenden Nebenprodukte und auf die Racemisierung des Hauptproduktes Camphen hin untersucht. Das giinstigste Verfahren zur praparativen Darstellung unracemisierten Carnphens ist die Methanolyse in Gegenwart von Pyridin. Die Racemisierung wird durch Wasserstoff-Jonen begiinstigt und IaRt sich durch 6-1-Hydrid-Wanderung beim tertiaren Camphenyl-Ion anstelle der 2.34s-Methyl-Wanderung bei der Nametkinschen Umlagerung erklaren. Die optische Stabilitat von Camphen wird studiert. -Die Nebenprodukte der Methanolyse entstehen durch eine Bindungsverschiebung 7-1 + 7-2 anstelle von 6-1 -+ 6-2 bei der Retropinakolin-Umlagerung uber das tertiare Pinyl-Ion hinweg, aus dern direkt a-Pinen (0.1 %), unter Umlagerung die Ather von Borneo1 und endo-Fenchol, unter Ringsprengung a-Terpinyl-methylather (0.5 %) sowie Menthadiene gebildet werden. Etwas mehr Terpinylather (1.4%) entsteht bei der Methanolyse des endo-Fenchyltosylats: der tertiare a-Fenchenhydratmethylather ist, anders als der Camphenhydratmethylather aus Bornyltosylat, sterisch nicht einheitlich. -Die gepufferte Acetolyse der beiden Tosylate laRt eine geringfiigige indirekte 2.6-Verschiebung erkennen, die bei der Methanolyse ausbleibt. Die Untersuchungen uber trimethylierte Bicycloheptan-Derivate der Terpen-Reihe sind ungeachtet ihrer grorjen Zahl noch luckenhaft. Eine eigene Arbeit iiber die Methanolyse von Chloriden 2) ist iiberholt und weitgehend zu berichtigen. Eine fruher als endo-cc-Fenchenhydrochlorid angesprochene Verbindung vom Schmp. -6" ist inzwischen als exo-Fenchylchlorid erkannt worden3).
